There are several versions of the same application floating around RV parts houses, on the internet and advertised in RV catalogs. They all work on the same principle as the D cell battery fan. They move air around in the refrigerator to help prevent cold spots or hot spots. The difference in this type is that it blows air across the cooling fins. This "supposedly" prevents ice from forming on the fins. They say in the advertisement "never defrost your refrigerator again" This may be true, BUT the freezer is a separate box, not affected by the fan so you'll still be defrosting the freezer on a regular basis depending on the humidity, how often you open it and how much space there is in the freezer for humid air to rush in. (A full freezer usually needs defrosting less often than an empty freezer)...
So far, we've never had a reason to improve on the cooling ability of our refrigerator. From the heat of the desert in southern California to the humid summers in Louisiana, we've never had a need to use one of these. I won't say it's a "gimmick" but if Dometic really thought it improved performance, they would capitalize on advertising it as an accessory for their products.
Just my opinion, others may feel differently.
