Satellite Internet

Kind of interesting rundown of satellite internet options.

I live in a pocketed area of about 1.5 square miles where there is not any kind of cable and the local telephone service does not support AT&T or any other DSL system on it's lines. Basically, there is no internet where I live.

However, there are a couple of companies that use a "line of site" system that bounces, something like a microwave, from antenna to antenna off cell phone towers and off the top of city water towers and farm silo augers.

When we moved here, we did not know about the line-of-site systems and decided to try Hughes Net. Immediately, we realized the latency was not acceptable for us. This is when we learned how horrible Hughes Net was. Attempting to reach real people to get the service canceled within that first month, getting our money back, and getting their equipment removed was a horrible, horrible experience. One day, we really bit the bullet and waited .... on hold with them ... for over 10 hours (I am not kidding). We finally gave up.

There was no contact information, no support, no help. After WE returned the merchandise with their own RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) stuff, they lost our hardware and then billed us for the cost (not the rental ... the cost!)

We were fumed! It took over 6 months to get everything cleared up and I do not remember ever getting our money back. But at least we didn't have to pay more. Yes, we were well under the 30 day cancelation agreement.

This was 14 years ago, so hopefully, everything about that company has improved.

We are now with the "line-of-site" system, absolutely unlimited ... absolutely ... and works well for us.

When we travel with the camper we use a combination of our AT&T (Samsung) hotspots and a cheap-o ZTE phone with Visible. We also purchased the WeBoost cell phone booster we keep with us in the camper.

Even that article states that the "latency" is problematic. If you do gaming or do Skype meetings with your company working remote, the latency is something you cannot tolerate.

And even that article indicated Hughes Net is the most expensive of them all.

Dutch, I love it when people actually give names when things like this happen. No name? Then it didn’t happen!

I was in a similar situation back in 2004 and started a new job working from home (I was a remote worker before it became commonplace). I had HughesNet installed and it was terrible, then 2 weeks later my phone company upgraded their system and DSL became available.

I too was within my 30 day cancelation window and could not for the life of me get any acknowledgement or response from Hughes despite my best efforts which I fully documented. Then the charges hit my credit card and that put me over the edge. I reported a fraudulent charge on my card and they reversed the charges. Then Hughes started coming at me with threats, breach of contract and “repossession” of their equipment. I said “come and get everything, it’s in a trash barrel at the end of my driveway” (it really wasn’t). More threats, sending me to collections, reporting me to credit bureau, etc. Finally with all my documentation in hand, I brought in my state consumer protection division of the Attorney General’s office. They issued a cease & desist order, made them right their wrongs, write a letter of apology, and then Hughes said I could keep the equipment “on them” …….it went to the scrap heap. What a nightmare!

I am currently in a rural mountainous area now with no cell coverage at home, but I do have 1 gig fiber optic internet!

When traveling, we use an AT&T Nighthawk Mobile 5g hotspot/router with a WeBoost Drive booster. It isn’t 100% everywhere, but it does what we need when and where we need it.

Last thing; I just read that Thor has partnered with Starlink to be the first RV manufacturer to install Starlink on motorized RVs as a factory standard on select models. It can even be used while in motion. Crazy stuff!
