I live in a pocketed area of about 1.5 square miles where there is not any kind of cable and the local telephone service does not support AT&T or any other DSL system on it's lines. Basically, there is no internet where I live.
However, there are a couple of companies that use a "line of site" system that bounces, something like a microwave, from antenna to antenna off cell phone towers and off the top of city water towers and farm silo augers.
When we moved here, we did not know about the line-of-site systems and decided to try Hughes Net. Immediately, we realized the latency was not acceptable for us. This is when we learned how horrible Hughes Net was. Attempting to reach real people to get the service canceled within that first month, getting our money back, and getting their equipment removed was a horrible, horrible experience. One day, we really bit the bullet and waited .... on hold with them ... for over 10 hours (I am not kidding). We finally gave up.
There was no contact information, no support, no help. After WE returned the merchandise with their own RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) stuff, they lost our hardware and then billed us for the cost (not the rental ... the cost!)
We were fumed! It took over 6 months to get everything cleared up and I do not remember ever getting our money back. But at least we didn't have to pay more. Yes, we were well under the 30 day cancelation agreement.
This was 14 years ago, so hopefully, everything about that company has improved.
We are now with the "line-of-site" system, absolutely unlimited ... absolutely ... and works well for us.
When we travel with the camper we use a combination of our AT&T (Samsung) hotspots and a cheap-o ZTE phone with Visible. We also purchased the WeBoost cell phone booster we keep with us in the camper.
Even that article states that the "latency" is problematic. If you do gaming or do Skype meetings with your company working remote, the latency is something you cannot tolerate.
And even that article indicated Hughes Net is the most expensive of them all.
