Accumulator for water pump

Has anyone installed an accumulator downstream of their water pump? if so, what size? Looking to get some middle of the night hand washing without the pump running which is right under DW's head.

Accumulator for water pump

On previous TT I installed the small Shuflo accumulator tank. Was not much value since it was not enough for a toilet flush.
On current FW, I installed a 2 gal accumulator tank and it does what I want. Up to five flushes with the pump off.

Thank you, just what I was looking for. I was concerned the small ones would not be enough volume/energy storage for a flush and/or hand wash. Now just to find enough space to mount it.

FWIW, I installed a small shurflo this year. It significantly reduced water hammer and cut the noise of the water pump. I agree that the volume is not sufficient for it to keep the pump from coming on within a second or two of a toilet flush, however, there is enough volume to flush the toilet a couple times during the night with the pump turned off. We just turn off the pump at bedtime and turn it back on in the morning and nobody has to suffer through the pump coming on bedside their bed.

How do you remove the water from the bladder tank to winterize?

Accumulator for water pump

Mount the accumulator with the port at the bottom and air valve facing up. Bladder will expel the water when pump off and facet open. Then winterized as normal.

Yeah, I just pumped antifreeze into the system like normal. It goes into the accumulator same as the water pump and lines. It is part of the system.

I've thought about this for some time, especially since, pretty much, all my life I've lived in houses with their own well and had accumulator tanks in the system.

I understand when winterizing, not a problem there. But when unwinterizing, how do you flush the pink-stuff out of the tank. Even a small amount that might reach a water heater takes some considerable flushing out the drain hole to clean it out?

And for the OP. If you do go with an accumulator tank, install the largest one you can find that will fit your space. The larger the tank, the happier I think you'll be. Go for big, you will not be disappointed. Look for an empty space, somewhere in your camper where the tank can be installed. Nothing says it has to be right beside the water pump. A line can be run anywhere. Just make sure it's upright (as suggested above) so it drains for winterizing. You could even install a cut off valve and a drain valve so you can drain the tank separate, and then use the cut-off valve to keep any pink-stuff from entering the tank. (I think, if I were to add one, that's the way I'd do it.

Accumulator for water pump

With the port of the tank pointed down, there are no issues with dewinterizing the accumulator tank. If you did not keep the system pressurized with antifreeze as I explained previously, there is a negligible amount of antifreeze in the tank over the winter.

In the spring, flush with fresh water. Allow to pressurize to max psi, then open faucet without pump or city water hook up so pressure drops to zero. Do this a few times to flush the tank.

My accumulator tank is mounted under the kitchen sink, ten feet away from the pump.

Or, two "quarter turn valves" can function as a "bypass kit" for the accumulator tank just like they do for the water heater, effectively eliminating any need to worry about antifreeze in the accumulator.

Accumulator

Thanks everyone for your input. This will be a project for the new year but before the first spring trip. Looking forward to "Silent Nights".

I also installed a 2 gallon pressure tank. Made the pump near silent. Still have some "line slap" but that's not near the pump and not bad enough to bother with. Very much worth doing.

One thing, if you run a T and single hose to the tank, which does allow you to mount it anywhere, then you only have "through flow" when the pressure tank is filling or emptying.

Only a concern when winterizing. If you don't pressurize the tank and let antifreeze flow in and out, or use air or some attentive technique, that hose and fittings will hold enough fresh water to break stuff when frozen.
