That reminds me, another for awesome scenery is the little known NC State Fair campground during an NC State football game. Get there early and get a spot along the road, sit back, relax and watch.

Any of the COE campgrounds around Priest Lake near Nashville are fine and with your Golden Age passport, $10.00 a night.

When full timing our traveling style was “keep moving”. We averaged about 20,000 miles a year for the first three years and stayed at a couple hundred campgrounds/RV Parks along the way.
First there are the military parks. We stayed at a lot of them because I’m retired military and am qualified to stay at any of them. Many are very nice. For convenience, ease of parking, size and lot privacy our number one pick is at the AFB at Del Rio, TX. All sites were FHU with 50A service. Parking was on large pull-thru concrete pads with attached concrete patios and privacy fenced on both sides. Every thing, commissary, post exchange, movie theatre, Olympic pool and even the 9 hole golf course were within walking distance from the RV Park.

Of the state and federal parks we used Natchez Trace in TN get’s the nod as the best. It has too many amenities to try and explain here. I’ve provided their web site. Browsing there will explain it much better than I can.
There are a number of camping locations to select from. We wanted near good fishing and our site was huge with FHU service including 50A elect. Got a good dish signal but had to move it away from the trailer to get away from tree blockage. You can see it in the picture.

Over night parking. We used so many of them it’s good that I took pictures. Some got missed because of rainy weather. It’s really hard to beat a good KOA for overnight parking. They are almost always easy to get to and park in. They have good service and camp stores with things you might need during an overnight stop. Most have FHU service. The one I’ve picked out had the largest sites and very level. It’s no longer a KOA but it’s still got all the right stuff for the overnighter.
(We don’t use free parking lots or boondock).
Here is a picture of the Fort Stockton, TX, KOA. Now called Fort Stockton RV Park.

Long term parking for us was about 3-4 months at a time during seasonal changes. We like warm weather and our goal was to stay close to it whenever possible. In the beginning we stayed at some really nice resort type RV Parks. It’s not our style, we’re just down home type people. We found, that long term senior mobile home parks sometimes allow a number of spaces be kept open for RVs. We have stayed in those for stops longer than a month whenever possible. Normally the sites are larger than normal and all have mail service with your own assigned mail box. Here is a picture of one we stayed at in Peoria, IL - Mt. Hawley MH Park.

If you get back down to South Texas you may want to check out Lake Casablanca State Park in Laredo. In town and plenty of shopping nearby. I never stayed there but drove past it a hundred times.
Those Air Force pilots from Del Rio used to provide decent entertainment when they did their dogfighting practice and I was standing around in the middle of nowhere (Catarina TX.) watching compressor station construction.

If you do a search on this forum, there is a thread with pages and pages of comments about KOAs located all over the US and Canada.

I saw a hot tub there a few years ago. Don't remember if it was at turn 1 or turn 4. Right next to the road that about everybody drove on. Quite the sight. We have used lot J. Usually pretty civilized.
Sure wish we could have made the spring race. It's my favorite track. This is probably our last Indy500 so we will have a more open spring next year.

We had a covered patio building with picnic table at this site aboard the Naval Air Station, Corpus Christie, TX.
The RV Park also has a beautiful fishing pier jutting out into the bay.

I seem to remember a hot tub a few years back. There was also one on the back of a pickup. They were driving around partying in it. You never know what people will show up with.
For reference, the old campground outside of turns 3-4 has hookups, the newer campground outside turn 2 does not. Lot J is now reserved and also allows tent camping, not first come first served anymore. The drawback to lot J is you either have to walk or take the tram. It's a long walk. We are in lot F, which is the one just outside turn 2. Most of the RIR property campgrounds are pretty civilized, they don't put up with much of anything, as well as the Henrico PD who patrols them.
I was looking forward to the Spring race this year since they moved it back to a day race, but life got in the way and couldn't make it.

We didn't do the spring race because we didn't want to haul all the way to Richmond, come back home, and then haul back to Indy. Now we can't make the Richmond fall race, or USAC 4 Crown at Eldora, because our first grandbaby is expected 1st week of September. Not complaining.
But if all is well I might make Eldora.
You interested in 2 tickets to Eldora and a reserved camp spot, if we don't make it? Sept. 26. No charge.

I never fished any farther south than Rockport. They have a lot prettier water down south than we do on the upper coast.

You know, you can drive your vehicle right out on the beach on Padre Island, back it close to the water and surf fish (as you have said) in the clear waters. Don't you know all we could catch were those 25"-30" Reds....LOL!

I'll have to look into things and see what Sept looks like. I've been wanting to go to that race. Let me get with everyone that may need me to see what their schedules are and I'll get back to you. Thank you!!!

The Washoe Jeep Club lot at the Reno Air Races with pit access. I heart airplane noise.
My other favorite I can't divulge. Sworn to secrecy, but I can tell you that its a remote, high elevation dry camping spot with ATV trail access. No phone service. No TV. No WIFI. No stores. No restaurants. And much of the time, no people.

Merlins, R-2800's, R-3350's and a Bristol Centaurus sleeve valve or two in a Sea Fury. One of the guys runs electric for our camp and another makes Picon Punches and the Jeep Club cooks three squares a day. It's a fun week if you're an airplane guy.

I've got a less than basic knowledge! I had co-workers that were airplane nuts and listened to it all day. My best bud had 172 but was always talking about a Swift. He wanted to split it down the middle, take out 6", and put it back together. I never understood.
Two other coworkers did garage projects. One was a push-pull that turned out good.
If it has a motor and makes noise, I'm always interested.
I can understand a radial engine crankshaft for about 10 minutes, then it escapes me, and I have to re-research it. About time....

Look at the R-4360. Puts the moving parts on a helicopter to shame, and nothing sounds as good as a radial engine on startup and idle.
