Keystone Passport 221BH hot water tank location

Can anyone tell me where this is located in the camper and whether or not it has a bypass valve for winterization? Pictures showing the location would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First, welcome to the forum.

Do you already own this trailer? If so, and the dealership didn't show you that sort of "basic component location" then you really, REALLY need to have a discussion with the dealership's delivery department !!!!!


If you don't own the trailer, but can go walk around it, look for something about "thigh high" that looks like this photo. It's the exterior door on the water heater. Take note of where it's located, go inside and the "rest of it" will be "right there, next to the outside part"....

Through the years, component location has changed one some trailers, even though the floorplan is basically the same. Since you didn't indicate the year, information may not be "completely accurate".....

Anyway, here's the picture of what you're looking for:

That would be the hot water heater, but where is the tank? From what I understand the bypass valve is on it.

It's all ONE UNIT, the face, the burner assembly, the tank are all in one box. The bypass valve is attached to (or within a couple inches) of the inlet valve which is located on the lower corner at the rear of the unit. It's all "encased in white styrofoam"

Ok I was wondering if that was the case thanks! Now the next big question, what is the easiest way to get to the back of this tank? I was able to see it (barely) through the back of the drawer after opening it, but unfortunately it doesn't haven a bypass valve installed. I think the only way is to remove the murphy bed and the panel underneath that. Thoughts?

Looking at the pic I am assuming the exterior wall is on the left? It doesn't appear the back of the water heater is accessible so yep, looks like you may have to "dig" to get to it. You have to access the water lines that feed the tank.

You are correct the outer wall is on the left. With that said, once i do install the bypass I think I can get my hands on the switch through that panel I removed. So I won't have to keep removing the bed to flip the bypass switch every time I winterize. Thanks for the help!

Have you looked closely in the pass thru for a removable panel?

Yes, and I can get to the water pump through there but not the hot water tank.

Why don't you just pop out the drawer and use a mirror to examine the far end of the tank? There's usually a flibbet on the drawer runners that allows you to remove it completely with no fuss or tools.

(P.S.: Make a note not to store your Hershey bars in that drawer!)

I thought about that but I don't think my arm can reach the back of the tank from there. Besides, i'll need two hands to install the bypass. Maybe after it's installed i'll be able to reach the switch from there.

I have a 22 passport 221bh. There is a panel in the right side of the passthru near the outdoor shower faucet. Has 4 screws and bypass for the hot water tank are right behind it. It is the square panel, not the curved one the water pump sits behind.

Thanks! I had previously dismissed this location at first because I thought there were three valves I had to open but only saw two in this area. The place I bought my camper from was able to show me this.

So, in the pass thru further past the curved panel is another panel?

No, the square panel is just inside the passthru door on the right. It has 4 screws and when removed you will see the hot water bypass valves in the lines going to the tank.

I've circled the square plastic panel you'd need to remove to gain access to the bypass valves.

Speaking of winterization.... does this trailer have a siphon tube to stick into a bottle of antifreeze?
