Just left the truck dealership...would appreciate some feedback

My local dealer has 6 - 2500 TRADESMAN CREW CAB 4X4 6'4 BOX on the lot ready to go with no markup ranging from 52-54K. The also have big horn models for 64K and up. The dont have any diesels, just gas. The other dealer about 10 miles away have similar inventory. With new ones close to the used one your looking at why would you go used? If you want a used one, even around here they are premium.

This got me thinking about how negative equity that rolls into a new loan gets taxed. In theory, you've already paid taxes on the original loan. If you roll $5000 over from the original loan does it get taxed again? I found this with a quick google:

If the negative equity amount is included by the dealer in the total vehicle price, it will be included in the base on which sales tax must be charged. If it is not included in the total vehicle price, the negative equity amount will not be included in the calculation of sales tax.

If it's included in the total vehicle price you will be paying sales tax twice on that money. Hopefully you live in Montana or some other no sales tax state.

Regardless of the answer, the OP should not trade in a vehicle with negative equity. It's creating a compounding issue that will continue to snowball.

Don't forget if you trade a vehicle in they deduct trade value from purchase BEFORE taxes (which in this lovely state of NY equated to just shy of $3,000). So if you sell outright add the tax to price.

Skillet is correct. You should factor in sales tax if it applies to you. Trading in at $36k compared to selling at $40k(private party, carmax) at 8% sales tax rate would be a near wash and I would trade in to skip private party hassle and time.

Are you sure about the cargo capacity of that truck? I looked at a new 2500 Dodge diesel on Monday and the max cargo was 2100 lbs according to the sticker on the door jam. After that I went and looked at a new 2500 Chevrolet diesel and the max cargo was 3066 lbs. That’s a big difference.

Honestly, because I ASSUMED new trucks would also be marked up like crazy! You know what happens when one assumes....smh. So yes, now I'm looking at new trucks, but in my area inventory is very low.

Just an FYI. I purchased a 2018 Ram Tradesman diesel with 45000 miles in Oct 2021 and paid $53000. (Reno NV) sold new for about $55000. They gave me $21500 for a 2013 Sierra 1500 with 90000 miles on it, paid $23000 in 2015. The truck market is crazy.

Used vehicles are up 31% over last year and new are up 11% according to most reports. I think the reason used cars are up so much is availability. You have to wait or travel for a new car so most are paying the premium for used.

Yes on my 2015 Hemi Ram 2500 4x4 the payload is 3130 & towing capacity of 12,850 . The diesel version of the same truck looses 1k payload capacity due to weight of engine .

Well not all 250/2500's follow the same rules! In 2020 and 2021 GM and Ford increased the GVWR of their "3/4 Ton" trucks, from the Class 2 limit of 10,000#, to around the 11,000# range, moving them into the "One Ton" Class 3, while labeling them 250/2500's!

Next time you are looking at 250/2500 look at the GVWR, then look at the payload.

Hi, it sounds like we are in the same line of work, I have the 2020 Ram 2500 its awesome you will not be disappointed. My dealer still offers me over the purchase price ever 3 months or so. You'll find that it's tight in parking garages at work sights at around 7 feet high, all those Rams in there are 1500's.
