No information about the hitch system.
Without proof, just using the information they lived in the TT, it could have been overloaded and when seeing the rear bumper area stacked with cargo. It could have been improperly loaded. That could have been a factor in the wind causing loss of control. It was mentioned in the first post, witnesses said he was traveling to fast.
They were in the truck hanging over the railing for over an hour. Thankfully they were not killed.

I'm not being callous but DW just showed me a news article about the couple; the Cunninghams. Seems as mentioned they lived in the RV and it was towed by an '04 F350. They say wind "just picked the trailer up" causing them to lose control. I'm very dubious about that statement given the TV and a 30' trailer (per article). I would figure speed played into the picture.

Seems the wife was lamenting the loss of everything they owned, memorabilia.....everything important. But have no fear, the article said they have established a gofundme page to regain their dreams (my choice of words). I heard they were hoping if they could just get a new Newmar Dutch Star and Range Rover to go behind it they thought they could get by......(sarcasm/facetious).

A quote from an actual rescue team member:
"This accident happened today in Idaho. Excessive speed, sway, and load mis-management each played a part in this accident. Luckily my rescue team was fortunate enough to rescue both occupants and 2 dogs from this crash.

This F350 single rear wheel truck was equipped with a Reese WDH with a sway bar, but he also had a rack on the back with a large generator, spare tire, firewood, and other camping gear on a Curt receiver hitch cargo rack.

The skid marks told the story, with evidence of multiple sway action as he entered a curve on the interstate, which in Idaho has a speed limit of 80 mph. The trailer overtook the truck, causing it to Jack knife, the trailer contacted the right Jersey barrier, and pushed the truck over the left Jersey barrier and over the side of the bridge. The trailer ball was pulled out of the hitch and the truck was dangling dangerously by only one remaining safety chain until emergency crews arrived and secured it with 3 heavy chains to a semi truck who happened to be right behind the accident. The bridge crosses a deep, narrow gorge (approximately 150 feet deep), which had the single remaining chain failed, the truck would have plummeted to the bottom."
Now we all know.

Last post summed it up pretty well. Guy on scene had all needed details. If it ended up being a fatal crash ISP would likely conduct a full inspection of TV and TT. Some where in a 50 page report would be approximate miss balanced, overloaded data. (Is my guess).
BTY, it's common to have vehicles at 90 to 100 on I84 here in the 80 speed limit zone. I stay about 65 towing and get passed, not only passed, but zoomed past with pickups pulling every type of trailer. I see ISP on the freeway every trip to Boise, most have someone stopped.
I have not talked with any troopers yet about ticket fines here. I am also guessing it must be lower than Oregon with all the high speed travelers. In Oregon over 100 is over 1,000 in fines.

I believe the semi was the one following them as they lost control, I could not imagine watching that crash unfold!!!

It was such a shame to see this happen to these folks. And I do feel for them and the loss of all their belongings, truck and RV...

That said I live about 75 miles from this section of I84 and the winds thru here are quite tricky at times ( year round)..

The live interview with the couple stated he was towing in heavy winds and thought he would be ok... And they knew they road since the are from the Boise area..

He should have pulled over at the rest stop and waited this out.. I have a few times myself or have taken an off ramp and sit on the on ramp side and wait for winds to drop down...

Only the driver knows how fast he was going. He had plenty of truck for that RV as far as I can tell...

Hope they had really good insurance

I don't see where many belongings were lost like the article mentioned they were. RV still intact, probably won't want to open the Coke in the fridge for awhile.

I wonder if a lot of things someone would want replaced could be destroyed in the accident...whether it happened at time of accident or 6 hours later before the insurance adjuster got there
Years and years ago I worked for a large company as a refrigeration service tech... they had a up to $300 refrigerator food spoilage warranty...it was funny how many people had refrigerator failures and the food that was lost was filet mignon’s, pounds of shrimp and expensive seafood ...they finally had to stop taking peoples word and make them save all the spoiled food in a bag for the tech to verify

There was one picture in one of the links that showed a bunch of stuff in the bottom of the canyon.

Yeah I mostly worked on hvac systems..the techs I knew wouldn’t go near a bag of spoiled food..management came up,with that idea..I guess they figured if you were willing to keep a bag of spoiled food outside your home then you were probably telling the truth.
