Heat pump question

Trying out our new Alpine on it's maiddan voyage. I tried using the heat pump and not having much luck. I set the digital thermostat to heat pump mode but the furnace will come on. Also the thermostat will flash between hp and furn. Any ideas?

What was outside temperature? Heat pumps do not work when it is cold, so maybe your thermostat is smart enough to use furnace. Usually happens around 40 degrees F.
