went out last night to look at the door. tapped around where the struts are screwed to the door and it sounds hollow. the bracket looks secure. those of you who have had it give out, did it separate slowly? or just give out? I have a camping trip planned this weekend and I am the wagonmaster for my camping club this time, so the outdoor kitchen will get a heavy workout. my 291TG was made in Feb 2010.

You could see the brackets on the door slowly twisted. So I would screw them back in until the gave out.
So far my mod is working out good and my buddy's door which is way heavier is still holding up too. His must be solid wood.

Guys, Did you get a fix from Keystone on the outdoor piston issue on the doors? I have just found this forum and have had the same issues on my 291TG since I've had it. I've had it fixed once by my dealer, but now the warranty is up and they are claiming ignorance on the issue.

Thanks,

I do not have the actual date, but it was made the last week of March 2011. Hopes this helps you.

Thanks,
I had a new door ordered by the dealer. (see earlier in this topic thread) it actually just came in so now I need to get it installed. I was told there was some bracing to take pressure off of the struts. I will let you know how it all works out.

After camping the past few weekends I have to state that the struts have pulled right out of the foam core door.
I had to support the door with a telescoping pole for the weekend, just to use the kitchen.
Good thing the door is supposed to be replaced this Friday with the new design. Let's see if that really happens....I hope I am not being blown some line to keep me happy.
Anyways I'll post what the new setup looks like when installed.
Hopefully it will be better....

Well, there is nothing to show.... The door and setup looks the same. I was told by the dealership again today that the bracing has been improved, so I can only assume that it is, but it is internal to the door.
I will be going to Michigan for a few weeks starting this weekend, so only time will tell.

Back from 2 weeks of usage and the door still seems good. I assume the strengthening is internal to the door, possibly some wood in there now. Hopefully it will last longer than the warranty.....

outside kitchen

ours has been fixed for a month or so, and I can report, with fingers crossed, that we haven't had any more problems with it. I believe its the steel plates that they have placed inside the door. Happy Camping

I carry a card of spare washers ( about $2 at the hardware store), replaced the washer and all was well.

Reviving this old post, looking for size of gas prop

Hello all, we just purchased a used 2012 303TG, the outdoor kitchen door has issues like what is mentioned in the post. My issue is that the door is missing the gas props all together. What I am looking for is advise on what LBS and length the gas props that are currently in your unit holding the kitchen door up.

If you had photos of the gas prop and the bracket that is on the inside of the kitchen witch holds the prop.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Prop the door open to the desired height. On our unit, the door, when open, does not reach 90 deg. It is canted down a few degrees. I like it that way as it will draw rain water away from the camper. Just make sure the refrigerator door clears the inside of the open door. Now measure the distance from between the two mounts. That will give you the length of the strut you need.
As far as the rating is concerned, it will depend on how close to the hinge the struts are mounted. On our Laredo, the original struts were mounted very close to the top (hinged) edge of the door. This resulted in a lot of leverage on the mounts because of the length of the door out past the mounts. The struts were 20" long and rated at 80#. The pressure on the door surface was actually causing the fiberglass to bulge out in the area of the strut mounts. I added 3/16" aluminum plates to spread out the stress and moved the strut mounts lower (away from the hinge). Te struts I bought were 36" long rated at 80#.
This arrangement worked, but the door was very hard to close - not as much leverage due to relocating the mounts. Replaced the 80# struts with 60# and the door works like a champ and no more bulging of the fiberglass.
I don't know why the previous owner removed the struts - perhaps they would no longer support the door or there may have been other issues.

Awesome. Thank you for the great advice. Would you happen to have some photos of the changes you made.

It’s obvious that what was there before did not work as the spot inside where the prop bracket were screwed have 8 or so holes. The door surprisingly looks intact beside the hinge damage on one side. That’s another struggle is finding those hinges. Never ends. Haha.

Your fix I think will be perfect. Thanks again.

Hard to get a good pic but here goes.
The 3/16" plates were probably too thick and I probably used too many screws. But,my goal was to save the door.Click image for larger version
