I have totally rebuilt it. Perfect for what I do.

See red snappers or "huauchinango" as they are called here.

I can hear those fish sizzling in a pan over an open fire now. Enjoy.

A few years ago I rented a 450 year old hacienda for the DW's birthday, it was just outside of Dolores Hidalgo, about 500 miles from Laredo. Hacienda Las Trancas

We drove down, from Dallas, with our friends who were in a 40' motor home, pulling their mini van and had zero issues (other than completely screwing up how we crossed the border, totally our fault).

We stuck to mostly the toll roads, which were very nice, inexpensive by US standards and had little traffic on them.

I believe I could retire there, it is absolutely beautiful, the weather is fantastic, the people are friendly and truly love Americans.

We have flown back and rented cars several times since and I would not mind dragging the 22RBPR down for a couple weeks stay.

If I were really determined to do it I would go first time with a "caravan". Also would consider a EPIRB and/or satellite phone.
I have friends that hunt and used to hunt in Mexico. What they say is they are more comfortable in the interior that the border towns. They also will not cross at certain places on the Texas border. Especially nowhere from Laredo south. Their perception is the violence is worse along the border.
A couple years ago I did post retirement contract work. A lot of it near Laredo on the 105,000 acre Piloncillo ranch. Nothing but brush between us and the river. It was something I never felt good about. I had to always be on the alert. We had a Border Patrol shoot out at the ranch gate. Helicopters overhead daily. BP cars flying up and down US83. Ranch managers truck shot up with him in it. BP all over the ranch on horseback. Strict orders by my employer to never stop and give aid. Written rules included no firearms allowed, broken by all my coworkers. To go to the other side of the river with minimal law enforcement. No thanks.

Brian that Hacienda looks awesome. That I would do. Where is it?
Actually living in the interior sounds appealing. Especially if you read old Fred Reeds rantings.

Howdy Gearhead,

The hacienda is north of Dolores Hidalgo, on highway 51.

hacienda map

We had the whole place, for a week and there were 18 of us.

It was awesome.

OP, hopefully folks will provide their firsthand personal experiences (good or bad) for you. Others that perpetuate 3rd hand stories without personal experience won't be helpful.

I know of a couple that have a blog that are documenting their trip in Mexico. Should provide some light on your questions.

http://tagteambike.blogspot.com/2016...ro-mexico.html

They do a post everyday and entered Mexico in early November.

This is an interesting thread it seems like a few people are afraid of Mexico because of what they read online.
I took off to Mexico this year and pretty much does drove until I found some nice places to relax and fish. The people and cops are all friendly and I was only searched twice which is pretty common ans expected.
I don't camp in the RV campsites I just find a nice place to camp along the water. Yes they have a problem with drugs and the cartel but they don't shake down the tourists. If you travel outside of the cities you might have a problem or two which I've experienced but that was my stupidity for being too adventurist.
If you camp in the RV parks you'll be very safe and you'll have a wonderful time.

Lots of different opinions here. I personally know a senior couple that have been travelling into Mexico for the last 25 years with no serious issues ouside of a few non violent confrontations. On the plus side they are both very fluent in Spanish and look like locals. They travel in an older Dodge travel van.

We have taken our trailer to Puerto Penasco every winter for the past three years. We have had 0 problems. We also took our trailer to Cabo San Lucas one year--with a Caravan-- and nobody had any problems or issues. We are headed to Kino Bay for a week in the middle of January without our trailer and then Puerto Penasco in April with the trailer. Unfortunately we now have a post 2007 diesel truck and they don't have ULSD in most of Mx so we can only go a short distance so we can get back on the the same tank. Some don't worry about it and put some LSD in but I'm afraid to do that.

^^Earl could you carry a few 5 gallon jugs of diesel with you? Or maybe an in bed tank if you want to do this often?

I have thought about that and it would get us a little further. While we love MX I'm not sure we love it enough to invest in a tank and go through all that. At 77 I do start looking at the work involved. LOL. But thanks for the suggestions.
