Hello from Kankakee, Il

Just jumping in from Kankakee Il. Our journey to a Keystone started last October after we met friends at Covered Bridge Festival in Indiana. We set up our camper just like we have done a ton of times only this time we had a fire that began in the hot water heater and also consumed the refrigerator burning through the roof. It happened very quickly , my friends jumped into action unplugging the camper, shutting off the propane and quickly unhooking the hose to extinguish the fire. We had a lot of conversation about not knowing where the fire extinguisher was , you know the big red tube by the door and the one in the basement by the grill. On the horizon of retirement our search to find a replacement was full on. We made a four hour drive to see a trailer that was literally sold as we were looking at it. We stopped at family's to visit on the return trip and we found a 2013 Keystone Bullet Premiere 33BLPR that hit all of our checkmarks.

Greetings and welcome to the forum!

First off, we'd like to thank you for your service

Sorry to hear of the fire in your former RV and glad your are ok. This should motivate folks to do the required inspections of the water heater, and refrigerator vents in their RV's!

Have fun with that new to you Bullet, and stay safe!

Welcome, We're a couple hours north of you in McHenry, just south of the cheddar curtain. I used to pheasant hunt near Kankakee in Herscher, and St. Anne years ago. I grew up on Chicago's south east side.

Sorry to hear about your fire, it's an awful thing for anyone to experience, glad no one got hurt.

If you need advice for camper problems there are plenty of experienced people on this forum to handle just about anything. I've been a camper owner for a little over 8 yrs and still consider myself a newbee, always learning something new here.

Welcome to the forums and glad you were all safe. But sorry about the damage to your camper. It sounds like things worked out OK in the long run. Glad you are all OK.

I'm from Indiana and we've been to the Covered Bridge Festival many, many times. We like to camp at Racoon State Recreation area... been going there for years.

Right after the old jail in Rockville was purchased and transitioned to a bed and breakfast, we stayed there on our wedding anniversary that year. It was a fun experience. It's changed a lot since then, and from the last photos I've seen graffiti has appeared everywhere. It wasn't like then when we were there.

My mother and father-in-law also had a pontoon boat docked at Racoon for a season once also. I've done lots of fishing and canoeing there. Lots of hiking and lots of campfires! And toured (I'm pretty sure) ever covered bridge in Parke County. By the way, off season (no festival going on), Mansfield is a really nice little town to visit, see the mill, the covered bridge, and enjoy the river and the food.

So, just curious, where you you camped when the fire occurred? There are several state parks and private campgrounds in that area.

Welcome, I am originally from the K3 area. Another campground to check out is Oak Lake RV resort in Fair Oaks, IN. It's east of Momence about 45 minutes from K3.

Welcome to the forum

Congrats on your new purchase and thank you for your service. We stayed at the KOA in 2009 on our road trip. Made the mistake of saying I was a Green Bay Packers fan.

It's a huge reminder and coming from Public Safety it happened quickly and I was grateful my friends all reacted smartly in disconnecting from power, turning off gas and using the hose to extinguish. The other wives grabbed fire extinguishers and mine said she didn't know where ours was, ughmm the big red thing right next to the door. We dialed 9-1-1 and were told the Fire Dept was on a Box and since we got it out they would not respond. Thats not the way our division rolls. They did send the campground owners down, he is a volunteer, and look and took a few pictures. Our insurance agent said they recommend inspecting every 90 days. It was scary how fast it happened.

You are in a beautiful area. We have family in Austin and Rockwall by Dallas. It seems to be a place people from Illinois flee to.

I am a state certified fire fighter in Texas although I retired several years ago after 12 years with the Mico VFD and never heard the term "on the Box". What does that mean? BTW: Austin and Rockwall are traffic infested....

MABAS lingo . If the department is out on a box it's just they have responded to a box alarm and no one is close to respond. Our division started following blue card since plain language is not plain enough.
I have been to Rockwall my brother lives there, nice place.
