Break a way cable

Okay stupid mistake. Unhitched the 5th wheel and forgot to remove the breakaway cable from the truck. Realized it once I moved the truck. Okay so I removed it from the truck and punched it back into the caper box where it was at. Does that take care of or is there something else I need to do?

As long as the black box you put the pin back in wasn’t deformed, you should be good.

Didn’t see anything wrong with the box and the cable end just plugged back in without any problem.

You should be good. If left out for a long period, the box can overheat and melt. As long as you don’t see any issues, you’re good to go.

The break away box is just a normally closed set of contacts. The pin is non conductive and holds the contacts open. The truck pulling out the pin should not damage it.

Thank you everyone. I’m guessing it will be okay. Was only disconnected maybe a minute or two. Everything looks fine. Thank you all again. Why I like this site so many people willing to help.

I did that pulling into Yellowstone in the dark and the rain. I was fortunate enough to have to replace the cable too.

Pulling the pin does not hurt anything. I occasionally pull mine on purpose, just to make sure the brakes are still actually working as they should. It's part of my Spring maintenance routine. I've never had an issue with one, 3travel trailers and 1 fifth wheel later.

When we do an axle service we will pull the pin with the wheels in the air and then try to spin them to verify they are working.

I have seen a box melt after about 15 minutes with the pin out.

When I was transporting, DOT would pull them when we were inspected. The brakes had to hold for a few minutes, I think it was 5 mins. We had to bring batteries with us to connect and have them operational.

Well talk about a scare! I was backing up hill to the blind side, when all of sudden BANG! Trailer stoped HARD, thought I had hit something where there should not have been anything. I did a quick check nothing, then tried to move again, nope! Got out again and did a bit better check, and laying in the bed of the truck was the break away pin. I reinstalled it and all was much better!

Had mine get wrapped around a piece of firewood in the bed of the truck, pulled out in the middle of an intersection and locked everything up. Lesson learned, don’t haul anything in the bed near the break away cable.

haha, I did the same thing, and didn't realize it until I went to back it in to the driveway and couldn't figure why I could not move it. Plug back in a all is good.

Husband sold our 08 Duramax with the hitch AND the safety brake pull out. He and his friend were the last to unhooked the 5th wheel. I went to use the trailer for the first trip of the year and wasn't going anywhere. Lol, he didn't believe me that it wouldn't be going anywhere without it. We sold the truck to a friend and sure enough it was still connected to the hitch and returned.
