California's Drive-Through Redwood Down

The tree dropped during this last storm. Lots of redwood on the ground. Being California and all, I suppose they'll do something creative with it to memorialize the tree. Too bad, actually. Living in the desert, I realize how important trees are.

Thanks to our brain-surgeon ancestors there are many drive-thru redwood/sequoia trees throughout the west coast. I guess that was cute back in 1897. They are truly magnificent to see. When I look back and see how smart some of our earlier presidents were to set aside the national parks that they did I am also amazed one more time.

The 5+ year drought here is really causing havoc with trees. Campgrounds are cutting down branches/trees because they're stressed from lack of water. Cheaper to cut them down than face the costs associated with them falling on something/someone. The bark beetle has also killed thousands of trees. It's sad to go into the mountains and see only brown, dead trees.
