Dirty rice.

On my way home from Knoxville Iowa. 98F in campground on Lake Melvern Kansas. Sacked out on the cab over bed. I got out of the races at 1:30 am, showered and got to bed at 2am. Got up at 6:30 and on the road by 7am. Tired.
Betty calls and wakes me up. She has to tell me a story. Our son and daughter brought lunch to Betty so she could visit with the grandkids. Daughter in law brings dirty rice. Four year old Nathan hears someone say dirty rice and won’t eat it. His mom takes his plate to the kitchen and runs the sink water, brings it back and he still won’t eat it. It still has dirt in it. No Nathan that’s meat. He wants some pie. No pie until you eat the rice. He never ate it.
I just had to laugh. I never equated the meat in dirty rice as dirt.

Little ones take some things quite literally. "Dirty" rice sounds to them exactly like it sounds..."dirty" and needs to be cleaned LOL.

Many years ago (sorry) I ate my first dirty rice in LA. We loved it. It was made with chicken livers. Not quite addicted I ate a lot. Got the recipe and made it as well. Went to a place that used boudin in it and it was pretty good. Stopped at a place in TX and ordered it; looked a bit funny and when I tasted it I thought something was really off...HAMBURGER! Anyway, just a thought on "dirty rice"....my kids love it though (54 and 49 now but liked it back when too).

'Dirty rice recipes' in Louisiana will vary as much as turkey dressing recipes in Michigan. However, in my short search, this is as close to 'standard' as I could find.

Classic Dirty Rice

Ingredients For New Orleans Dirty Rice
1 lb bulk pork breakfast sausage (jimmy dean, hot or mild)
1 lb chicken livers or gizzards, chopped very fine or ground
1 lb ground beef
2 Tbsp worcestershire sauce (lea & perrins)
1 md green bell pepper, diced
1 lg onion, diced
2 stalk celery, chopped fine
2 c converted long grain rice (zatarain's or uncle ben's)
1 bunch green onions, sliced thin
3 clove or "toes" garlic, minced
salt, black & cayenne pepper to taste
1 can (14.5 oz) low sodium beef broth
1 can (14.5 oz) low sodium chicken broth
3-4 oz water or as needed
2 tsp cajun/creole seasoning, or to taste
1/2 tsp sage
2-3 bay leaves
1 1/2 c fresh chopped flat leaf parsley

In a large Dutch oven or saucepan, over medium-high heat, sauté the sausage, beef, and livers until no pink remains. Drain all but 3 Tbsp from the pan. (If sausage is very lean add bacon grease or butter to pan to make 3 Tbsp.)
Add the bell pepper, onions, and celery. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Cook for 5-7 minutes until the veggies begin to soften and brown. Add the rice, green onions, and garlic; continue to stir for 1-2 minutes until the rice begins to toast or turn brown.
Add the worcestershire sauce, beef & chicken stock, creole seasoning, sage, and bay leaves. Mix well, turn the heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.
Cook until the rice is fully tender and the broth has been absorbed. Stir well and remove from heat, then stir in the chopped parsley.

Chef's note:
Don't let the Sage scare you off because you don't taste the small amount of sage in this recipe but it does make a difference in the taste, so don't leave it out.
Some people like to put diced pork or Andouille sausage in their Dirty Rice, which is fine - almost anything goes, however, adding sausage or tomatoes will lean the dish towards a Jambalaya. Dirty Rice shouldn't be too wet or gummy, the grains should separate easily and still be moist enough to hold together on your fork.

Is that the way Popeye's Chicken makes it?

I simply can’t believe that they would make it any other way. I can’t say much for their red beans and rice, but their spicy chicken is pretty darn good if you are on the road and looking for someplace to eat.

For a quick meal I like their "dirty rice" but heavens only knows WHATS inside it Sometimes I'm just better off not knowing...

I grew up eating it traditional…chopped livers. Betty won’t knowingly eat organs, so it’s hamburger for her.
Popeyes ain’t bad, chicken or dirty rice.
We usually have some frozen cooked hamburger. Betty will throw it in a packaged dirty rice mix. Quick and easy.
Waiting on the seasons first cold front to make a gumbo.
I’m not gonna wait long.
Edit add: try some Tex Matti rice, you’ll throw that Uncle Bens away.

Brent, if you have an opportunity, give Ellis Stansel Rice a try also. They are out of Gueydan, Louisiana, west of Lafayette about 15 miles I believe off LA14.
Yes, good rice makes a big difference.

That rice sounded interesting so went online to see about ordering some...can't do it. Don't know if they don't have any, don't ship or what. Looks like they used to offer it on Amazon but it is unavailable anymore. I guess the best bet is to call them and see what's going on. Instead I just ordered me a bag of Louisiana Cajun Jasmine rice. We love the Jasmine so we'll see how that works out.

Bad news...Popeyes has discontinued cajun rice! It was my favorite.

There’s another rice from the Lafayette area that we have been meaning to try. It’s sold in most of the Rouse groceries around Lake Charles and Lafayette. Parish rice. Mail order available. Not cheap. Supposedly 53% more protein and a low glycemic index if you’re diabetic.
I may be setting myself up for a shopping trip to Louisiana. Rice and non ethanol gasoline. LOL

Yes, good rice makes a big difference.
I will look for it next time I’m over.
I know a little about Gueydan, friend from there. Go Devil mud boat distributor. He pronounced it Gaydan. He could tell good stories about the big duck hunting clubs around there. They actually brought Bob Hope in for entertainment before opening day. So he says.
Ancestors from all around there.
Parish is available from Amazon Prime.
We’ll look for Stansel.
