Oregon?

There seems to be quite a few of us from Oregon on the boards. I've got a spot reserved at River Bend campground, just east of Sweet Home, on Labor Day weekend. There's still 11 or 12 full hookup sites available, if anyone is interested in getting together. I stayed there last summer for a weekend, and it's pretty nice.

Oregon is on my bucket list . I called the state parks last year and talked with a real knowable ranger answered every question and suggestion on the parks that accepts larger rigs. I all ready made reservations for april to big Bend tex. When is the weather best for oregon going south on 101 camping then riding the Harley south on Hyw 1? I Want to camp a few day and go south a few 100 miles camp ride camp ride .

August is the best month. Miniscule likelihood of rain, and temps in the 70s-90s, getting cooler at night. Last summer I stayed at Honeyman State Park in Florence on Labor Day weekend, and it was amazing an absolutely beautiful park. My trailer is 33 feet, I got a 40 or 45 foot space but it just wasn't big enough for my trailer and truck. Next time I go there I will definitely get a 50 foot space.

As beautiful as 101 is, I don't find it too enjoyable to ride my motorcycle on. The wind can be insane and the traffic is nuts.

We spent over a month at various spots along the Oregon coast in August/September 2015. Bandon, Lincoln City, Seaside, just to name a few. One place was prettier than the next! We're going back again this year and will explore more of Washington. We just couldn't bring ourselves to move out of Oregon, so we ran out of time when we reached Washington.

Im thinking Driftwood or Oregon dunes st park would be my starting point. Is there another route I could use nearer to HYW 1 and be comfortable with my rig at 50 ft? Im looking at camping along 101 then riding the bike on Hwy 1 north to south or may be more North into Oregon.

Really depends on what you want to see and do and how long you want to spend on the coast. As a child and with my family we spend many weeks on the coast. I have owned vacation homes on the Long Beach Wa. coast since 2001 and go there now about 1 week a month every month.
I would look at spending time in or near Coos bay. Check out a white water jet boat trip or get a daily fish license, rent a boat etc and catch fresh salmon in the river or ocean. Near Newport is South Beach St park. alot to see there also fishing. Near Astoria the Ft Stevens state park has military history from 1850s to WW2. A museum in Astoria is a great look at ocean and river stuff. Other military forts just into Wa. from Astoria. Again get a daily fish license and get 2 more fresh salmon. The highway really gets grid locked on summer weekends thru each city. Travel thru on week days is much better. Forgot to mention whale watching out of Coos bay or Newport August- Sept or points between from shore or boat. And in Tillamook, the cheese factory and air museum, it is in the biggest wooden structure you may have ever seen.

Ill be coming from N M for some sightseeing to Organ .My McNally map is showing HYW 5 being Interstate travel. Im looking at Salem then taking 22 to 18 then camping at Oitis or stay on 22 to Hebo or cloverdall camping there near 101 . Would 18 or 22 be a route for my 50 ft rig. Im also open to suggestion in that area on 101. Thank You Roadglide. I wold more then likely make my destination Red Wood national forest. Coos Bay sound like a neat place to visit.

From PDX to the Oregon coast with a RV or car I choose I-5 to Salem to 22 than 18. It has the easier hills over the coast range, it has alot of 4 lanes and alot less traffic than 26 and much better road than 20 out of Albany to Newport. All those highways have 18 wheelers with 40 to 53 ft trailers traveling on them. 20 is the worst for passing slow traffic, unless it has been widen since maybe 10 years ago.

There are about 6 passing lanes on hwy 20 between Philomath and Newport. The construction to bypass the curviest parts of the road is still ongoing, has been for 11 years now and will be for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't recommend taking that road with a trailer.

Thank you Ken. How necessary will it be to make reservations during Aug? If I can find a camping every 200 miles or less to see each area is my goal. The starting point the starting point has been accomplished .

Over the years, we have made numerous trips up and down the Oregon coast and camped in almost all of the state parks along the ocean. With each passing year, it becomes harder and harder to find vacant sites - especially during the summer months.

If you are thinking of trying to book reservations for August, I would start now. You'd be surprised at how fast the campsites are taken. Yes, it is very necessary to book asap to avoid disappointment and seeing the "Campsite Full" sign in most if not all of the State Parks along the coast.

Oregon state parks just this month started a 24/7 online up to 9 months in advance to put in reservations. So, who knows how this is going to be affecting finding sites. My opinion is when you know the dates you want, better go online. In the past waiting til spring or summer and phoning in, and waiting because there busy all day just to answer a call is to late. Driving to a state park and finding a spot on the coast on any weekend is likely not going to happen. Likely not on most week days either.

I have been looking at state park map for camping along the coast in Oregon. The government maps are good but there is no price for camping , are all the state parks the same price?

roadglide -
Information about each state park - including fees - can be found at this site:
www.oregonstateparks.org

A common fee for full hookup is approximately $31. Reservation fees are extra.

Just 363 miles of coast line for Oregon and I have 7 state parks picked. I though there was something like 500 miles of coast line 3 parks should be enough for a stay of 3 days each. Thanks again.

I am now a retired rider but did put in some 28 years of road and dirt riding in my home state of Oregon. The Oregon coast has some spectacular scenery and also a lot of small towns to pass through on 101. Weather can change from one area to another and we found an electric vest to be a great investment in comfort for the changing climates even in late summer. Side roads leading along the rivers and streams away from the coast can be great bike roads but they will get filled up with traffic, as you get closer to the roads leading to Portland. Check your maps, the real squiggly roads are great for bikes but not commuting, lower traffic.

I have traveled I-5 to Montesano to Long beach several times. Once with a RV. Nice drive, lots of country and bay views. Areas south of South Bend to the Columbia river have open fields that are or were farms and have many Elk year around seen from the highway. Done the drive at night and there is a need to drive slower due to all the Elk and some Deer, once and awhile a Black bear.

I'm having trouble finding a good web page for Washington St parks . It's nothing like oragan state park site. I had to fill out a questioner then I got e mail that wasn't worth much . I would appreciate any information about Washington state parks.

roadglide-
Try this:
www.parks.state.wa.us
Click on the "Parks" tab at the top of the page. If you see an email box, simply click on the "x" in the upper right-hand corner.

For other WA state park info, simply Google Washington State Parks and you'll find all sorts of info.
