That sounds about right for the non-XD. The XDs can get up into the 2300-2400 range if you get the right configuration (2WD single cab long bed gas engine I think is the highest payload). It could also be that the husband just didn't want to buy it
The whole 1/2 ton 3/4 ton 1 ton thing is really just marketing. Government rates trucks by truck class, and the ratings are all different depending on which office in the government you ask. EPA, FHWA (DOT), and oddly enough, the Census Bureau, all have their own tables of truck class, but in general they are all based on the GVWR of the truck. Why the Census Bureau took it upon itself to develop its own truck class rating system is beyond me.
The XD falls into the same EPA category as a 3/4 ton truck owing to its GVWR over 8500lbs. Nissan doesn't market it as a 3/4 ton truck because a lot of the popular trim levels and package configurations reduce the payload to significantly below 2000lbs, which is kinda the marketing cutoff for a 3/4 ton truck. The Diesel engine ironically reduces payload a couple hundred pounds, but makes towing a much more pleasant experience (which is why I went with it).
I used to tow my cargo trailer with my Armada and man it did not feel good driving 500 miles in and out of the 5000RPM range in the rolling hills, and that was at only about 6000lbs. I can pull the same trailer at clsoe to max gross (10k) with the Diesel and it's totally easy. I'll never go back to towing anything of significant weight with a gas tow vehicle.
