Crack in fiberglass

Just returned back from a 2000 mile trip And discovered a 4” crack in my fiberglass above the rear slide out (Passenger side) On the trailer fiberglass not on the slide Out. I moved the slide in and out while watching the crack it doesn’t seam to open open up of close up. The interior wall does not seem to have any cracks or deficiencies. Camper is 1 1/2 years old will keystone cover this under the 3 year structure warranty?

Will Keystone cover it ??? Only Keystone can answer that for you and their decision will be based, primarily, on what your dealership reports to them, the photos they send and the description of what you've told them, what they see on inspection and what their recommendation is for repair....

In other words, it depends, almost entirely, on what your dealer puts on the warranty request..... Your dealership only has ONE opportunity to make a "good first impression" so what they put in the initial report will outweigh almost anything they could add later.... So, a complete, accurate report the first time will be your best bet for successful warranty approval.

I'm thinking I would ask to see what the dealer is sending before they hit the "send" button.
I also think I would be setting this in motion pretty darn quick.

Update Keystone contacted me and the are going to stand behind the three year structural warranty. They are picking up my camper and taking it back to the plant to do repairs.

Great news! I'm glad Keystone stepped up and took care of it without a lot of hassle. Hopefully they can get it repaired properly and you won't have any further issues.

I would also suggest going by the dealer and thank them for helping out in this. Let them know when they do something good.

It should also tell you that when the Lippert frames they're using are the problem, they still stand behind their product, even if there are so many it takes 6 months to get it repaired..... No doubt, there's more to the story than what you've been told by Keystone.

Not sure that the crack has anything to do with Lippert frame. I’m sure it is from a broken stud or header above the slide out. Does keystone make the aluminum walls?

Yes .. Keystone assembles the structure at the respective model build site with their aluminum studs and such to the Lippert frame they ordered for the particular model

You will have one or more broken weld points at the slide out location and the issue has been going on for decades now.. Some have the issue and some dont.. typical crack location is the bedroom lower corner edge

Once you get the RV there at the factory for the repair it will take time to complete.. in the meantime I would not use that RV as the crack and damage is only going to worsen

They have a procedure to test the flex of the 5th wheel over hang to determine if the crack is structural or cosmetic.
All 3 of my last 5th wheels had a crack at the bedroom slide. The '02 had it at the top right corner that I filled with some Dicor & was still there when I traded it. The '09 & the '13 both had it at the lower left corner that appeared soon after purchase & both were repaired by adding a piece of H trim to the crack, so assuming both were only cosmetic, never had any further issues at those spots.

Since the OPs crack is at the rear he just has to have broken welds on the aluminum studs around that slide out.. not much else I am aware of will cause the filon to crack like that at a slide out opening

The flex procedure which addresses the front of the fifth wheel frame and pertains to cracks at a front BR slide out and such are addressed in this simple measurement procedure that any OP can perform.. and should a few times a year IMO

My 2014 Alpine also has a crack at the front BR lower edge of the slide out. it measures 1/4 inch long. I stop drilled that 6 years ago and filled with sealant and it has not increased in length.. The slide out area on my Alpine already came with the radius cut...

But had this crack been an inch long or more then it would have been at the factory... My tiny crack appeared after we hit an uneven land change over on Wyoming"s mighty fine I80 outside of Laramie

What size hole do you recommend to drill at the end of the crack? I will be using my camper tell keystone can get it in, I want to try to prevent the crack from continuing if I can. Thanks for your input and much appreciated.

I use a 1/8" drill bit to stop drill all cracks, both in fiberglass and in aluminum sheeting. I suppose you could use a smaller drill bit or a slightly larger one. Smaller will necessitate being more precise on exactly how you center the drill on the end of the crack and larger would be more difficult to seal the hole for cosmetic purposes.

The objective is to "hit the very end of the "running crack" to stop is forward progress. Sometimes it's difficult to locate the exact end of the crack in FILON with the gelcoat finish and decals covering some parts of the structure. Be "critical about locating the crack" before making any stop drill procedure.

I made my repair on the road .. noticed it when setting up at the next destination stop point on a 4K miles trip... used cell phone camera (magnifier option) and had wife hold bright light so I could try and locate end of crack as best as possible..

Stop drilled with 1/8 drill bit and taped around hole and applied sealant. Made a very light mark at end of crack for further observation. That was back in 2016 when I did this... nothing has changed since..

As part of my after setup walk around inspecting the slide outs, seals and main filon exterior area around each slide is just something I do. After every setup..
