Galley Tank Leak

We have a 2012 Cougar 327RES. When the Galley tank gets full we have noticed leaking from the tank on the ground. Took it to the dealer and was told it was a loose valve which they supposedly fixed. We are still noticing the problem. Anyone else had this situation?

Bigracenut Posts re Tank Leaks

Saw the postings re bigracenut problem with gray tank, so am assuming we have the same problem, just different tank. Guess we will need to go visit the dealer AGAIN! Thanks everyone! Sorry I did not see the earlier postings!

Blondeegal, Check for leaks around the vent under the sink cabinet. Unlike other tanks the galley usually is not vented through the roof. If the tank is full it may be coming out the top of the vent under the sink. Worth checking before surrendering your trailer to the mercy of your dealer. Hank

Thanks for the reply!

Checked under sink and no leaks-thank you for taking the time to reply and had hoped this was the problem-but guess we will have to hit up the dealer before warranty runs out. Just hate the thought of what they will have to do to replace (or even get to) the galley tank-just room for them to mess up something else!

At the Dealer

Took our 327RES to the dealer with the galley tank full, so they could see the leak while we were there (did not want to get the excuse they did not see a problem), water actually leaked onto their pavement so we got the message across!
Got a call yesterday, there is a crack in the tank, and they have ordered a replacement. Should have it back by the end of next week.
Why are we always worried another problem will arise due to a requested repair? Oh well-will just try to be optimistic!

Call from the Dealer for Update

Well, they actually realized there was a problem, ordered the tank, got it in, installed it and THEN realized the new tank is defective as well. Guess we will not be getting the 5th wheel back so we can go out of town next week.

Just thought this may be helpful to some others who may be thinking they have a leak. Seems Keystone is having trouble with quality control on the holding tanks. This is just the galley tank, hope we don't find we have problems with the other two.

Need Help!

Picked up the 5th wheel, and supposedly the tank was replaced and checked for leaks. We took it on a short trip to check things out, less than 200 easy miles. Realized after letting the Galley tank fill up (on purpose), there is still a leak.
Has anyone had this situation with any of the tanks, specifically on the 327RES? We are beginning to think there is something causing the tank to crack. We are very concerned there may be a structural problem that is causing the tank to crack.

Without knowing where the leak is located on the tank and other significant information, any speculation on what the issue may be is total guesswork. Were the two cracks, on your original tank and the first replacement tank in the same place? If so, there may be an engineering deficiency, but if the cracks were not essentially the same, possibly coincidental. As for your current problem, is it the same leak? did they actually replace your tank? is there additional damage or further leaks? did they use the same plumbing to connect to the tank only to find (later on with further inspection) that the 1.5" drain line to the gray tank or possibly the vent line going back under the sink has a crack or a loose/unglued fitting?

There are a vast number of possibilities here. If you have more specific information, it would be very useful in trying to help determine what problem you actually have.

The gray water drain system is not a complex system, but there are many parts other than the tank that could be causing your issue. Or you may have two issues and they only repaired one of them. Please give us any more information you might have. If you don't have more information, maybe crawling under your RV with the repairman may give you more perspective and a greater understanding of what's there.

Galley Tank Leak

The leak on the original tank (#1) only showed up when the Galley tank was full, so it appears the crack was on the upper portion or top of the tank. We actually lowered the under belly cover and saw water running over the top of the tank. We DID NOT notice water leaking when the tank drain was open. Replacement tank (#2) again only leaks when the Galley tank is full and not when the drain valve is open. Did not have time to lower under belly cover and check tank #2. We checked and the drain pipes under the sink, including the vent, are not leaking. Since the dealer said they found a crack in tank #1we are going on the belief that was the problem. Will have to wait to hear from dealer on tank #2 as to whether there are multiple problems. Additionally we are going to ask to see the tank if there is a crack.

Although stranger things have happened, I find it really difficult to believe that the gray tank split in the same place twice and that also a new one from the manufacturer was split in the same location. That just goes against all the odds. Possible? I suppose so, but very, VERY unlikely. The gray tank is supported by a couple of 2" wide steel straps bolted to the frame crossmembers and otherwise the gray tank just lays along the framework. There may be some movement that is causing your problem. Or the drain pipe may be cut slightly short or long causing stress on the tank entry. There should be a screw in flange mounted in the tank that is waterproof. The drain screws into this flange creating a leakproof union between the plumbing and the storage tank. There is also a screw in flange for the vent. It it also connected to the vent line in a leakproof manner. There should be no leakage. When you overfill the tank, and assuming the vent valve under the sink is operating properly, any additional water in the sink should simply remain in the sink and not drain down. There should be no water leaking out of the coroplast bottom of your RV.

I'd ask to see what is leaking, and since this will be the 3rd tank installed (actually 4 tanks have been cracked), I'd also ask the dealer to allow me to verify the installation before they reinstall the coroplast. When they have it finished, I'd fill the gray tank full of water, look closely for any leaks, then install the coroplast. Drive it while watching closely for any leaks as there may well be movement that's causing the issue.

Thanks to Keystone RV Forums

Thanks so much for your speedy replies. Am going to get to the dealer before they get the bottom all sealed up, and not only check the old tank to see where it is cracked, but also determine how it is mounted as well.

Note: My husband is pretty savvy when it comes to taking things apart, and seeing how things work, not to mention he can fix almost anything. This has definitely got him puzzled. Can not imagine how the average person could get by relying on the dealers and maufacturers BS! This forum is such a big help!
