Deadbolt key will not go into lock.

My DW locked the door on the RV. She removed the key with the cylinder turned to the left without recentering the key slot vertically before removing it.

Now the key will not go all the way in so I cannot unlock the deadbolt.

The key slot is horizontal and poking around with a thin pick it feels like there is a pin on the right side that is stuck out and cannot be persuaded to go back in through wiggling, prying, WD-40 etc.

Any ideas short of drilling out the lock?

P.S. We are supposed to be going on a trip tomorrow.

Brien

Locksmith. Deadbolts can be a pain. If I ever had to get into an RV in an emergency, I’d probably bust out the door window. Most rv dealers carry them in stock, they’re around $80 and easy to replace. Probably cheaper than a locksmith. I’m just surprised that she was able to remove the key. I’m sure with a lot of patience you’ll get it open evenetually if you keep working to get the key back in. Hopefully someone else will be more help than me. A laundry shoot into the storage area would be a nice access point, more trailers need to have that.

Have you turned the slot sideways and tried the key?

I saw that. I’ve had luck inserting the key and turning it until it fully seats.

I’ve been able to make that work as well in the past, but based on what the OP described in his original question, it sounds like he’s been doing that as well and not having any luck. I fact it sounds like he’s tried just about everything and every which way without any luck. Dang deadbolts can be a pain in the you know what.

I know, I was the “other locksmith” at the prison I worked at for 7 1/2 yrs.

OP: try to turn the slot horizontal, and insert the key, if it doesn’t work, turn the key over and try again. If it’s an FIC lockset, there was a recall for the deadbolt locking and if the key was removed it pretty much “locked up”.

Ok, my neighbor, who is 6' 3" and use to do spelunking (cave exploration) was able to shimmy through the laundry chute. Picture attached. Since I leave a screwdriver with square drive in the bucket in the sink. He was able to disassemble the lock from the inside. Before that he was unable to operate the deadbolt from the inside. After a couple of times putting the lock back together including an additional chute climb, we got it all working. The one thing I noted was that there was a screw missing in the endplate where the bolts go through into the door jam. Found a matching screw and put blue Loctite on both screws so they won't come loose. Not sure if that was the reason the key would not go in but it all seems to be working now.

The slot was horizontal and I flipped the key in all of the things I tried.

Glad you got it. I would check if your lock set is part of the recall.

Chuck, thanks yes it is an FIC lock. Should I contact FIC directly about the recall?

I believe you can look it up on line, that’s how I found out about mine.

Whether or not if it is part of a recall, I would be replacing that lock assembly. The next time, you might not have a skinny friend to save the day.

Not sure where you got your window but one I had to replace was 400$ For just the replacement window.

Master (pass) keys are designed to open the door handle lock, not the deadbolt.

I have a large assortment of them in my toolbox.

For a door window? If you do a google search on RV door replacement window, there are several options and sources around $80. Most door windows are pretty standard. If it was a window other than the door, those get a bit more expensive.

I’m even considering replacing mine with this one and getting rid of the frosted glass
