Garden State Parkway

Hi Folks,

We are planning to avoid the GW bridge on a trip from CT to VA. We plan to take the Tappan-Zee bridge then the thought was to take the Garden State Parkway from Exit 14A on I-287 to get to I-95 further south at Exit 129. There are so many conflicting opinions on the northern section of the parkway right after the Tappan-Zee bridge. So, is it safe to travel with my fifth wheel on that section of the parkway or will I run into low clearance issues?

Thanks,

Tom

Not familiar with the roads, but do semis drive there? If a semi can go, you can go. Although there are probably exceptions, and this attitude may get me in trouble someday, but a major road with a “parkway” title seems like it should be able to support semi/commercial traffic.

It appears that commercial vehicles are not allowed but RV's and camp trailers are okay.

I’d make sure the commercial vehicle restriction is weight or height related.

According to this document, height is 15’. It could be less in areas where resurfacing has happened, but supposed to maintain 15’. That’s still at least 1.5’ to spare. I was able to find some additional info that appears there may be some overpasses that are lower near the shoulder and you need to stay in the center lane, but they say everything is well marked.

Tom, There are truck restrictions on the GSP above exit#105 but RVs are allowed. If you are over 13' use middle lane above exit #129 (over passes are arched) or stay on I287 from NY all the way to NJ Turnpike (I95) exit #11 if narrow lanes and heavy traffic with low clearance makes you nervous. I287 is longer and hillier (if that's a word) but designed for truck traffic. Whichever route you choose avoid rush hours or you will see one of the many reasons why I left NJ. JM2¢, Good luck, Hank

The route we take is tappan zee/287 to GSP to rt 80 to NJTP. The turnpike is smoother and less chaotic for us than the parkway so we get on the turnpike as soon as possible heading north or south. The turnpike is built for tractor trailers so there’s no low clearance issues.

Typically in the NE the term “Parkway” means cars only and low clearance over passes!

Exactly. Parkway is typically no commercial truck traffic but some may have a "local delivery only" exception. The others noteables (depending on the parkway) are typically the absence of shoulders sufficient to pull off on, short on and off ramps, guard rails and trees closeer to travel lanes, tighter turns, and less visibilty around curves. These issues are less north of the Tapanzee but just posting this so readers understand that farther south of that or other parkways like you'll find on Manhatten Island, around Washington D.C. or Virginia around Williamsburg those conditions will be evident..
