Angry Furrion backup camera not working with 2021 GMC Sierra

I recently upgraded my 2017 Silverado to a 2021 GMC Sierra for my 2021 Cougar 30RLS. I couldn't figure out why the backup camera didn't work with the new truck. Furrion informed me that the newer GMC truck use pulse width modulation to the accessory lights to reduce power consumption which means that there is insufficient power to the backup camera to power the transmitter.

I'm researching how to power the accessory lights from the RV battery with a relay switch to only power them when the trailer is connected to the truck.

Welcome to the forum

If you can access the junction box at the front of the trailer, you could run a switched wire from the battery feed to the marker light circuit. I’m not an electrical guru, so I don’t know if it will cause your new truck to have a “fit”.

Thanks. I was going to use a fog lamp relay from across the 7 way connector to close the solenoid and rv battery positive to power the marker lights.

Did furrion tell you they have an adapter that will strengthen the signal that you can buy. I had to get one for my truck because I had the same problem. Also you have to have your headlights on when using the camera. Not on auto but on to where when not in use you have to turn them off.

Furrion said they were working on a solution but didn't have an ETA.

They have an adapter it plugs into your truck 7 way plug then your 7 way for the camper plugs into it. I had to purchase one for mine.

Thanks Bob. Interesting that Furrion support didn't tell me that. There exact words were "we have a product in development to correct this, but we don't have an ETA on when we can expect that to through production and available to us." The offered to put me on a list to be notified when it's available.

That would be the approch I would take. I'm not edjucated on GM's circutry so don't know if it would cause any fualt warnings or not. If it does cause an issue then it would take some experiments to figure out a work around. Could be as easy as adding a diode to the wire or it could require a IC chip.

I’d either wire a switch directly to the camera from the battery with a pilot light so I’d know when it’s on
Or you could pull a wire off of the always hot terminal on the 7 way connector and put a switch on that….run it directly to the camera.
I’d put it in a protective sheathing and run under the trailer and up through the back wall to the camera location….it would only be hot when trailer is plugged in to tow vehicle..I’d add a fuse inline ..you could use the camera without the running lights.
If you want to get really creative you could put a contact switch on the trailer steps..when you open stairs the power is disconnected from the camera to the rv battery…but that’s probably just ridiculous…I get carried away sometimes

Id stay away from the running light circuitry even with a relay as it might affect the lights in the truck

That constant 12 vdc positive is not dependent on the TV for power. It's connected directly to the trailer battery and is always hot unless switched somewhere.

So if the BCO was off on the rv would it work then?…probably counter productive but just curious….a lot of extra steps for it to work ..maybe brakes on rv would not work with BCO off?

Edit. No I guess the trailer 7 way is before the BCO

My plan is to power the camera and marker lights from the RV battery (switched side of the relay). I will activate the relay from the battery charge pin of the 7 pin. This should not affect the truck's circuitry at all, and will only draw on the RV battery when the truck is connected. A manual switch wold work, but would have to be mounted somewhere. Running a wire up the back of a brand new trailer is not what I want to do.

Through the back wall not on the outside drill into bottom plate or likely
find an opening where other wires already run

Break away is required to be wired to the trailer battery, usually at the 7 way junction box. Other side is wired to the brake circuit, pull the pin and full voltage is applied. It is required by law to have a functional battery installed and hooked up if you tow a trailer with electric brakes. Lots of transportation drivers don’t bother but I guess as long as you don’t get caught or worse get in an accident it doesn’t matter.

I thought I had it all figured out. I thought that the 7 wire cable ran to the battery compartment. It does not appear to do that. The wiring bundle goes into the frame but I haven't been able to locate the other end. It doesn't appear to be in the battery compartment. I don't see it on the in command panel in the pass through where all of the relays etc are. I don't see anything on the breaker/fuse panel inside the trailer. The owners manual doesn't give a diagram for the fuses. Any ideas where to find the other end of the wires?

Follow the positive wire from the trailer battery or follow the umbilical cord, they will meet at the junction box.

You will need this adapter for the camera to work properly: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This was confirmed personally after speaking to the lead GM engineer for the wiring. It worked for me.
