Just traded for a 2020 Alpine 3801FK
Trying to learn all the differences from the Open Range we traded in.
So far, we love it. Hope to spend 80-100 days in it the next 12 months.
Thanks for allowing us to be a part of this group!

Newbie question.... set up in a park... How often do we empty black tank? I'm assuming we don't let it stay open, correct??
Thank you!

No, do not leave it open. Without water the solids will collect under the toilet and lead to what's called the "poo pyramid", a nasty thing to deal with. When to dump? With some usage you will know. It all depends on how much/often you use the toilet and how much water (use lots of water) is placed in it. I don't know the size of your tank so can't give a specific number plus folks have different "bathroom styles". For us we just go by days since we've done this for a long time. The toilet will "talk" to you; when it's getting full it will "burp" a little plume of water when it's getting full. Others go by the tank gauge in the RV but I've never had one that was reliable so I ignore them and go with what I know.

Thank you!
We have 30 gallon tanks (B & G). I've heard a lot of campers don't "rely" on the tank level indicators. Ok, I'll listen for the burp. Appreciate the reply and the information... Happy camping!

In my trailer the odor (when flushing) precedes the "burp". Just becareful during the back flush of the black tank. Do not start flushing and then get distracted by something else and have an overflow back into the trailer. When I do my two tanks it's a chair, timer and beer event.
Good luck

Welcome to the forums and congrats on the purchase of your new camper.
I have never heard or had the "burp" in 3 travel trailers and now a fifth wheel. But, one key indicator when the tank is needed to be dumped is by the sound of the falling water down the bowl hole.
As the tank fills, that falling water sound developes a higher pitch. It takes a while to hear it, and one of the easiest way to pick-up on that sound difference is to be hooked up at a full-hook-up campsite. Dump your black tank, close the outside valve. Go inside the camper and stand there and hold the foot pedal of the toilet and fill it completely up to the neck of the toilet (you can see down the hole real well with a flashlight). You'll hear the falling water sound change in sound frequency as the tank gets fuller and fuller. Watching down the hole at the same time, you can see how the water level is increasing.
Put together in your head the visual of the water rising and the sound you are hearing. It will take only one time to do this and you'll have it locked in memory. And of course, once the tank is full, be sure to dump it (that's the advantage of being on a full hook-up site... you can experiment with things like this.)
In the future, every time you flush the toilet, you'll hear the sound of the water falling, and by the sound alone, you'll know how full the tank is.
There are lots of little tricks to dumping your black tank, this is just one of many ideals.
I dump my black tank every other day, but I also have a process I go through, even if the tank is not full yet. (Too long to elaborate here, now.) Just suffice, if you are camped for several days, to learn your camper, dump at least every other day a couple times to get the feel for what's happing. In the future, you may want to go longer or shorter depending on your use and if you have full hook-up or not.
