I 95 in NC

Just came North on I 95 from Savannah to just North of Smithfield NC.
I 95 from Lumberton to Smithfield was a mess.
Construction to widen the road made the 87 mile drive into a 3 hour ordeal.
Stop and go. Really, many times we just sat there.
Because of crazy drivers there were fender benders to add to the fun.

This looks like a pretty long term project and I 95 in NC NEEDS to be 3 lanes but it's a giant headache for now.

NC and SC are behind on upgrades and widening, Georgia was bad about 10 years ago but is much better today. Virginia eventually will get to I-95 seems the I-64 and I-81 corridors are their focus right now.

Thanks for the warning. We’ll be taking that route in about a week. Guess we’ll need to leave earlier than planned. Thanks again.

When I-95 gets frantic in those areas we pull off and use US-301. We travel those roads frequently because of having family in Fayetteville and close friends in Smithfield.

I never noticed how 301 runs parallel to I-95 through that area. We take 301 to avoid I-4 and Orlando, Florida. But didn’t realize how far north it runs. Great tip. Thanks very much.

Be careful on I 95 thru Georgia. Last time we went through I saw a lot of feral hogs next to the road.

Just bumping this thread to see if there are any more recent updates on this stretch of road. We’re going to Charleston and Savannah this month.

if your heading to James island park in Charleston be careful of the overhanging trees along the route…picturesque live oak trees all along the road with really low limbs…i called the county and they said they were actively trimming them but it was sketchy

That's the truth. I couldn't believe I didn't hit them. Guy pulling an Airstream behind me at check in couldn't believe it either.
If I had to I would pull into the oncoming lane to dodge them.
There are 3 ways to get in the park. I'm thinking Central Park Drive may have been the best.
Food is pretty good.
There is a historic plantation right in town that is interesting. McLeod Plantation. We had a woke tour guide but good otherwise.
Parking is terrible in the historic district.
But that was last year, so...

We just came through Ga., SC, NC and into Va about two weeks ago on a return trip from Fla. We had no issues whatsoever. Safe travels!
