I had a backflip 3 fold on my RAM 2500. Not enough truck for a 17k 5th wheel so never changed the oil and got a 3500 long bed. I have a 4 fold backflip on it.

Moral of this story when the wife says we need to upgrade the Honda Ridgeline and the 17’ camper buy the camper first!!!

I have a BAKFlip MX4 and like it. I also have a factory bumper step which makes it easy to open and close.

I have a roll up type cover from Tuxedo Covers. It works perfect for my fifth wheel towing. My hitch height is below the bed rails so when not towing the whole bed can be covered.
The first one sent to me had a vinyl fake leather material. The glue they used failed to adhere the material correctly. They sent me a complete new unit with a fabric top free of charge under warranty.
Real happy with the way the cover gets out of the way easy .RMc

The guys that installed it took pictures of my F350 and used it on their website. It's a Pace Edwards M-BLF7084 Bedlocker Electric. They had a video but I can't find it right now. I upgraded the stereo too while they had it. I was considering getting a new F350 dually but there's nothing wrong with my old one so I'll just keep it and upgrade it. With the Bank's Power programmer it makes more power than the new ones anyway.

I’ve always used roll up covers, different brands over the years. On this truck I decided to try a tri fold. Absolutely hated it and will never own another one. It was fine for the 5th wheel and provided some cover for anything in the front of the bed when I was towing, but if I wanted to haul anything , like a couch or mattress, I had to remove it or sacrifice the font 2’ of the bed. I sold that one and now have another roll up. This one is a Truxedo Edge and is the best one I’ve ever had. What makes it better than others, the latch to lock and release it is the easiest to use of any cover I’ve dealt with.

I use the BakFlip MX4 with the 4 panels. Don't want any roll up as I just can't stand watching them flutter and flop going down the highway. Also the BakFlip will support up to 400lbs as I recall, is very sturdy and can't be opened like a roll top. I lose maybe the front 8" but I can't raise anything that long straight up from the end of the tailgate anyway.

These discussions always bring out the " Flippers " and "Rollers" of the Tonneau Cover community .
For the OP, your preference will depend on how you want to configure your truck bed. Some of these covers are not the best design for auxiliary fuel tanks or tool boxes.
I will say with the roll up, I have two straps that secure it in place while driving and I roll it from the side of the truck without jumping in the bed to flip panels.
Just my .02 cents of opinion.

I was able to open my flip cover from the side of the truck as well. It also had two straps to hold it in place when opened. I just didn’t like the fact that I lost the front 1/3 of the bed unless I removed it. There are a lot of different designs out there. I’ve seen some really nice covers that roll up into a roller at the front of the bed, almost like a roll up door. Which is probably like some of the people here are talking about. I just couldn’t justify the expense. Plus, when I roll up mine, it’s on top of the bed against the cab, I don’t lose any bed space. It all depends on what is important to the owner.

My vote would be a Pace Edwards Bedlocker electric. But, I’ve had them on 4 trucks since 2001, so am kind of partial to them. They have gotten more expensive over the years, but I love having an 8’ trunk that I don’t have to try to roll up myself (at 5’6.5” tall, the truck beds over the years have gotten too tall for me to reach comfortably). The first Bedlocker on our 1999 Dodge was working great yet when we sold it in 2013. It was in better shape than the truck!

Just looked one up, to say they’ve gotten more expensive is an understatement. Maybe I’m just cheap, but I can’t see spending $2500 for a tonneau cover. That’s just me.

Twenty years ago we bought a Chevy S10 crew cab. I bought a fiberglass "lid" for the bed that was color matched to the truck. It was great for security but of course healing anything taller than the bed rails wasn't practical. I used to say we bought a car without a trunk lid so I added one.

In 2009 we bought our F150 King Ranch. I really wanted an electric powered retractable lid but couldn't justify the cost. So I bought a Truxedo roll up coner. Installed it and a bed rug by myself and it took about an hour. That was in 2009 and it's still going strong albeit a little faded. The top is still as tight as when it was new. If I want to hual anything dirty or tall I use the utility trailer so I could care less about those considerations.

The one in the video was a little over $3000, but then it's an 8 foot bed.

My last truck had a TonneauPro Tri-fold hard cover. It had a 300 lb. weight capacity, but rattled a lot and no matter how tightly I secured it to the bed rails, it always “creeped” and I had to constantly adjust and retighten. On camping trips we had to remove and store it at home and do without.

When I bought my new truck we had a Truxedo Truxport soft cover installed and we really like it so much better. It is quiet, looks great and we can keep it installed on trips so when the bulky stuff is out of the bed, we just unroll the cover and what’s left is dry and out of sight.

As far as security of a tonneau cover, even if you spend thousands, they only keep the honest thieves at bay. If someone wants in, they are getting in.

I had the MX4 BakFlip also when I had my F350 dually. Heavy duty cover that let me keep one panel down when hooked up to the fifth wheel. Cleared my Curt Q20 when not towing. Still on the truck and looks good.

A lot depends on if the truck is a short bed or long bed. Also if pulling a tt or a 5th wheel. I have a 5th wheel pull with a short bed. Currently have a 3 fold hard cover. Problem with it when towing have to remove it not enough room when folded between it and the hitch. Can’t raise it up cause it covers the rear window and the arms that hold it up are in the way when making a turn. I ended up ordering a new one this one is a hard cover however, doesn’t fold up. It slides into into a canister and when completely closed only takes up 12 inches. Leaving plenty of room between the hitch. Not cheap but then again nothing is any more. Cost about 1,800.00. But to me it will be worth it.

My last two trucks have had a retrax cover. They are pricey but very nice. Only downside is losing some bed space to the cartridge that the cover rolls up into. But, hasn’t been a problem for me.

That was my hubby’s reaction when I bought the last one for the 2019 (and I think the price for an 8’ bed was $2500 at that point). I ordered it since I had saved up the money for it. And mama likes a covered bed on her truck. Besides, I pointed out to him we saved the cost of one when we moved the Bedlocker on the 2009 F-350 to the 2016 F-350 (thank goodness Ford still used the same bed from 2009 to 2016 so it fit!).

Another plus for Truxedo. 3 so far and the one we have on the current truck got ripped in a 60 mph gust of wind on the highway. Replacement of the actual cover was really easy and cost was $164 shipped 2 months ago.
