An interm truck

A lot of you know my situation with my truck and it’s low posted Payload for my 5th wheel.

I’ve wanted jump up to a Dually, but we have a business project that is eating away funds and now our time for travel has been pushed down the road for several years. We will have short 200 mile trips to coast and such, not much freeway driving.

Question: who of you owns an F350 short bed, and do you mind posting your yellow payload sticker?
With Diesel (6.7 if you have it, gas has higher payload, but I want to stick with diesel)
I have a pin weight of 2900. I figure I need 3500 lbs or so to be safe with wife and pups. Help me out if you think that is adequate or not.

And please. Yes I know a Dually is the best for this situation, but I’d rather get a safer truck weight wise in the next 6-8 months that I can afford. Thanks to everyone.

Fish, I don't have a photo, but our first 2014 F350 SRW short bed Lariat diesel had a payload figure of 3450 also. Good luck in your search.

A F350 SRW is a fine truck and will take almost any trailer. I personally hate dually for 2 reasons. A pain to park and it is huge. We only have one vehicle.

If you want a diesel truck one ton then just get one and don't worry about weight issues. they will all work for you

Well, the dry pin on the OP's 5er is about 2,700# so with a Payload of 3,400# only leaves 700# for people, fuel, hitch and stuff.

The issue with the size of a DRW, is something one gets/can get use to. there are many 350/3500 SRW out there running well over GVWR.

We only have one vehicle, and it is a DRW, the reason is payload and safety. So I have scaled the empty TV with DW, me dog and her bed, and my tool box loaded with "Necessary Supplies", almost full fuel, and hitch well Yellow Payload sticker shows 5,411# TV scaled at 9,950# with a GVWR of 14,000# so payload is down to 4,050#. So we ate up close to 1,400# before even hooking up our 5er.
So many people look at payload and dry pin and don't take into account all the other STUFF that eats into payload.
This is why we had such an issues with weights on our 2001 Ram 2500, GVWR 8,800# TV loaded ready for the 5er, 7,800# ! No wonder we were 1,700# over weight!
While it towed fine, and no need for bags, that 1,700# and the fact DW didn't like driving a stick, it was time to step up.
If I had purchased a TV with 3,400# payload, and reduced it by the 1,400# that we did, we would still be 700# over payload, with a 12,500# 32' 5er.
I am tired of watching weight, I now have 1,300# of reserve.

Rosco, I believe we covered this idea of recommending bad ideas to newbies just because it works for you. It is not a responsible thing to do.

I agree they can be a pain to park, but huge doesn't describe a typical dually. It is a few inches wider but that's all. No hill for a climber!

Jim, I agree on size yes a bit wider than the old 2500, but not huge.
Makes me think of a bridge just east of McMinnville, OR 10’ travel lane, with concrete rail about 6” from the lane edge. Even with 5er in tow just center in the lane no issues. Watch the little compact car in front of us 6” over the center line!! It is all learning the size of your vehicle.

The trailer mirrors stick out further than the dual rear wheels....how many times have you knocked those off parking or driving? It is entirely a placebo effect, drive a DRW the exact same as a SRW and you will be fine (although you do have less traction on ice/snow).

But you float on loose sand better with the dually. [emoji16]

I've driven a dually a lot and never found it more difficult than any other long pickup... 176" is a 176 inches whether it had 4 wheels or 6.

Thanks for looking after me. I feel pretty seasoned from everyone here. I think (hope) I have a little more handle on it.

The big issue is price of course. I will still “weigh” all my options. I might end up with a Dually, I just don’t want to be over 65k. Wife want more goodies than our current XLT. (She has loaded Lariat 150)

I’m kinda leaning towards a nice f350 short bed so maybe she will take it over when we get a Dually. She’s talked about it, but who knows. She’s pretty attached to her F150

I want the 450. I will keep an eye on used trucks. I have a feeling once the 20’s kick out this fall a lot of 17-19 will hit he market.

It’s all just talk at this point. I want to just get safer. Trust me, everyone here is important and I value input, and I don’t like having an out of bounds set up.

I bought a slightly used 2016 F350 XLT 4WD CC DRW for just over &41K in Mar 2017. There are deals out there. Payload is 5601 LBS.

That’s kinda a mine of thought I was going to look into. With the new model year, some rush out to get more power and latest looks. While new is nice, if I can get the wife talked into used I will. Just contending with smells and wear and tear. I really like to see service records, even if you do it yourself like me. I keep track of all receipts.

Thanks for your help

Something to think about, both the F350 and the F450 are listed as Class 3 trucks, with a max GVWR of 14,000#. While the F450 is the stronger truck, it will be listed with less payload than a F350.

But neither of those trucks are really ever payload limited, it is about the shear towing strength, that is the main difference between the 350 and 450 isn't it?

Bigger axles, bigger brakes, bigger components and the ability to turn inside an F350 is what makes the 450 stand out

Thanks very much. I agree, it will take time. My wife really threw it out there, so like all men who try and act smart, I have to have logical info to give her.

Will it work better? Sure,, will it do for now, Sure. It’s not ideal circumstances we have in life at the moment, but again I’d like to get safer for everyone
