Pain at the pump!

Went to the Valero station early this morning and found that I couldn't fill my truck's tank. They cut you off at $75. I don't drive much and the last time I filled up, diesel was quite a bit less expensive. Diesel is now $3.05; more than a buck more than last year. No wonder inflation is getting out of hand. Shipping costs and airline fuel will necessitate the end user pay. Keep this in mind at the 2022 elections. God bless America!

I won't address future elections, that is a subject for other internet forums, not the Keystone RV forum....

That said, Diesel fuel, yesterday, was $3.599 and expected to continue price increases in the foreseeable future. One local oil distributor said we could expect an additional dollar/gallon and probably more. Natural gas is, for now, staying fairly constant, but propane has increased more than 75 cents/gallon in the past 6 months. It's also expected to continue increasing.

We're in for a very expensive winter for most households and it looks like our 2012 trip out west where we paid up to $4.25/gallon for diesel is going to seem like a "bargain basement trip" compared to what we can expect next spring.....

Crude is high because the Saudis and the people here in west Texas are not increasing production and taking profits to recover from last years -$40/bbl oil prices that killed a bunch of companies. Also, demand it off the charts, especially for diesel. There is a trucker shortage but the ones that are there are all over the highway. I drive 40 miles daily on "rural" interstate and it's not unusual to never hit the posted limit for some distances because of heavy truck traffic. Besides, the frackers like $80 bbl. West Texas Intermediate was $82 today. WTI break even oil price in 2019 for shale was $50, not sure what it is in 2021. So in actuality, things are really closer to where then need to be for people to still buy fuel and oil producers to make reasonable money. $2.30/gallon was not going to last forever anyway.

My truck holds 48 gallons of gas and there's no $ shutoffs at any station I use here. The QT has the best price but on any day a quarter to a third of their pumps are out of service. Not sure why, but I quit going because it's impossible most times to get next to a working pump. The Icee machine gives better service there LOL.

I respecfully disagree. We as RVers have a vested interest in Diesel, Gas and Propane. As that an election is most likely the ownly way this is to change the current prices it is the right place to address this.

Supply and Demand
During the "lockdown" demand was very low and so were prices. Back in May 2020 a barrel of oil was trading at under $10. So, the oil companies both foreign and domestic cut way back on production. Then in 2021 the lockdown ended, the vaccine was available and people started going back to work, traveling and getting back to normal lives. But the oil companies didn't ramp up production enough to cover the increased demand. Higher demand, limited supply resulted in higher prices.
The oil companies are making up for lost revenues and profits by limiting supply. "U.S. crude oil production is expected to fall by 160,000 barrels per day in 2021..."
Elected officials have very little influence over the price of any commodity especially oil and refined fuels. Today's higher prices are the result of the oil industries profit taking not any political legislation. "The oil giant (Chevron) announced a $3.3 billion adjusted profit in Q2, compared with a $2.9 billion loss in the second quarter of 2020.
Here's a short article from Reuters that may shed some light.
https://www.reuters.com/business/ene...0million%20bpd.
We all hate higher prices, but lets put the blame where it belongs.

Canonman has it IMHO. Unless we were to nationalize oil production, the market will dictate the price. Washington could potentially dump out some of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve but again - my opinion - would be better reserved for emergencies like a hurricane hitting square on Baytown and/or Surfside and shutting down the refineries for an extended period.

FWIW - Mexico has nationalized oil production and according to google, price is around $4.12/gallon USD.

Falcon, my point exactly. The market does dictate the pricing. And, I am most definitely not in favor of nationalizing any commodity. But let's face the fact that in the case of oil and refined fuel production the supplier has in the past (remember the '70's oil crisis) and likely will continue to control production in order to maintain highly profitable revenue margins. It's the suppliers ability to control the market through limiting supply and not government legislation that has created the most recent hike in prices.

Disagree all you want. This forum is NOT a venue for political discussion. Elections, how they're conducted and the results are about as political as any topic can possibly be. DO NOT DISCUSS POLITICS OR ELECTIONS ON THIS FORUM !!!!!

Discuss diesel pricing, how it affects you and your "RV related travel plans" but do not discuss the "politics behind diesel pricing". That is a violation of the basic core rules of this forum.

Hopefully that is clear enough to prevent stepping over the line....

$3.05/gal? Count your blessings. Gas is near $4.00/gal and Diesel is higher.

Gas in Tucson was $2.99 yesterday at a Circle K, the Circle K in Casa Grande 50+ miles away was $3.19 & 50+ miles further north in Phoenix it's $3.39+. At all of those the diesel was within .05 of the gas prices.

It's 2.80~2.999 here most places. And I noted that diesel is within a dime or so of gas, unlike when we were in the $4 area and it was like .50+ higher. A farming acquaintance at that time told me he was averaging 260 gallons/day stripping cotton. Diesel pricing just seems weird.

Around here diesel is about $3.59 a gallon and .10 to .20 cents a gallon less than regular gas.

So, pump up to $75, let the pump shut off, and then pump another $75. Keep repeating until the tank is full. Inconvenience yes (a little), but if you want the full tank, do it that way. Or ... hit your $75 max and finish filling up at another station.

Complaining about fuel prices themselves won't accomplish anything. We're all just kind of stuck with that evil burden!

"Baker-Hughes rig count hit 500, a level not seen since April 2020".
Permian is up, EagleFord is up, Colorado up 1, Haynesville and Macellus down 1.
My opinion....give an oilman a chance to make money and he will try to.
Any company that tried to "hold back" would have their investors screaming.

A couple years ago I bought my trike from a couple up in Lubbock and it was when that storm hit the gulf and shut the refineries for a bit and transport from the refineries was messed up. I didn't realize folks would rush the service stations like gas was going to be unavailable forever. Waited a week after the storm hit because I was afraid there might be local flooding (there wasn't) and flew up and drove the trike on home. EVERY station in Lubbock was out of gas as people had been standing in line to get all they could till it dried up. I got out in the country away from the big city and small mom & pop stations had gas as most probably only had a tanker come in once a week. It was strange. Kind of like the toilet paper situation when the covid first reared up.

I'm seeing truck stop diesel at $3.60-$3.70 on interstates between Houston and Kansas City. I have only used a truck stop once on this trip for just a top off.
Our usual spring long trip to the east coast might not happen if prices jump much more.

Yep Mexico is in bad shape. Probably 30 years ago PEMEX bought 49% of Shells Deer Park Texas fuels assets. They spent a ton of money on modifications to run heavy Mexican oil....Mayan Mud we called it. They can't keep their Mexican refineries on line, poor reliability. So this last summer PEMEX bought the rest of the refinery. She'll kept the Chemical Plant...2 Olefins units and a Phenol plant.
The super majors are under tremendous pressure to reduce carbon footprints. She'll has sold all Permian assets and several refineries. All that accomplishes is a change of ownership.
We are losing control of of this country's lifeblood and our kids futures.
