So I just took delivery of my 2021 Ram (see sig). Although my RV is not the largest by any means. Pin weight could be in the ballpark of 3200-3300. I could have made it for sure with a 3500 SRW gasser, maybe with a 3500 SRW Diesel. Is it overkill? Right now yes. However reading this forum religiously for the last 3 years and soaking up information from these very fine and knowledgeable folks I went BIG. Money wasn’t really any different than a SRW. Looking ahead there is always the possibility of “upgrades” to heavier stuff behind.
However what works for me may not be for you. Do I need the big truck? Probably not, it was more a want than a need in the configuration I chose.
“Gee wiz” stuff.....
My pickup is simpler. No adaptive cruise or lane assist, it does have the gooseneck prep. 50gal tank, 4:10 gears etc. I bought it to pull.
Stereo is decent, I didn’t get leather but did opt for 5 passenger seating with the big console (DW request on cloth and buckets).
Installed my own LED bulb package, splash guards.
Got the spray in bed liner, windows tinted ( with an “eyebrow “) and sidesteps. Oh we stream so it also has WiFi.
So pretty basic. LOTS of payload.
Main thing is to make sure it’s safe and just in case.....it’s legal... weight wise.
All 3 are good and capable TV’s.
Good luck.

Scott

Congratulations on the new rig, sounds awesome! I hate leather seats,so your new rig sounds right in my wheelhouse. Enjoy the new rig and safe travels.

Congrats Scott. Sounds like a great rig. Unfortunately years ago I bought a vehicle with cooled seats. DW is always "hot" and she loved them. Now I have no choice but to choose a package that includes the heated/cooled seats. She always turns on the cool, I have her turn off mine. In cold weather when the truck auto starts and turns on I have my seat heater turned on....she hates it. And where were we when we just got in a vehicle and "warmed it up"?

Well if you are looking to future proof yourself, time to start looking at a DRW. We got one, we tow about 13,000# with 2,700# pin and about 500# of stuff in the in bed tool box. That said I am looking at used DVR's shorter units about 38' or less, still carry up to a 20,000 GVWR! I have a 5,411# payload, and a 25,000# tow rating.

You'd think..

Though seriously that's only about a 1000 pounds over the DRY pin weight. If I remember right, dry was 2570. The trailer is only a little over 14,200 as it sits with a GVWR of 15K. Part of that is the 15K AC up front as I had them swap it out from the 13.5K that came standard. And the Fantastic Fan in the bath instead of the little crap that came standard.. Oh... and the 7.5 pound pizza stone it's 5/8" thick

The problem with this trailer, if you want to call it a problem is the storage spaces. There is nil behind the axles, even the fridge and stove is in front of the axles.

We are not full timing but we are loaded as if we were. We decided long ago that hauling crap to the trailer every time we wanted to go camping was ridiculous; and so we keep it loaded except for perishable foodstuffs. We are ready for a weekend, or a month, or a year without loading anything else. We even keep the dog food and treats in their sealed containers. Along with at last count 186 DVD's

Literally, I can leave work at 3:30 drive the 7 miles home and pickup the DW and pup, drive the 5 miles to the trailer, hookup and be on the road in a total of 45 minutes. And I have beaten that a couple of times..

When we get home the only things unloaded are the dirty clothes and perishables. We make a list of foodstuffs that we need for the next trip and replace them when we return the clean clothing and so we're ready again..

Totally agree with the statements in blue!
We didn't head out right after work often, the time we did, it was an hour and 15 minutes, but I had to put the hitch back in the truck and air up the tires. We also loaded a tote with perishables from house refer to load the 5er refer. Pretty much the same on return, bed was made with fresh sheet, before departure. We agree 100% preparing for next trip should happen the week after the last trip, makes RVing so much more enjoyable.

We were fortunate that we had space to store ours at the house & I added water & electric for it to hook up. We could get off work & be ready to go as soon as the dog jumped in the truck, she loved to go.
It also doubled as a guest house when family came to visit. The grandkids thought they were hot stuff getting to "go camping" in it alone parked next to the shop.

Also agree with the statements in blue. Ours is in a 40X50X16 with an RV 50a service. Other than rotating clothes and bedding, it’s always full and ready to go. Except for the 3-4 months from Dec 1 to Mar. but yeah 45 min and we’re on the road. We top it off a couple of days after our last trip, ready for the next.......”just add water”

During the summer, our trailer is parked next to the garage. All we need to do is fill the fresh water tank, empty the "house refrigerator produce drawers, load the milk and bread and we're ready to go. Everything from sheets, clothes, underwear, towels, even "clean rags for using outside" are loaded and ready. All we need to do is hitch up, check the lights and lock the house.

When we get back, everything that's dirty goes to the laundry room, the refrigerator "produce and milk and bread" get taken into the house and after the wash is done, it gets put back into the trailer along with any "staples that need to be replaced.

Then, the trailer is "ready to go, all we need to do is fill the fresh water tank, ....., ....., .... and hitch up, check the lights and lock the house.

If I am going out for more than a week I try to remember to take a clean pair of underwear! I get excited at the thought of a new truck with electronic running boards somebody mentioned. What the do those things do? Go up and down? Back and forth? Stow away and HIDE? My ol' beater has A/C, power steering, 4WD, plastic floor and cruise control although I am not sure how to work it. Oh yeah, the horn works great too. All this junk on a truck isn't my style but then I have no style.
