Finally talked DH into upgrading to a 3/4 ton
After a season of pulling the passport with the 1/2 ton, I really wanted to upgrade the truck. We were closer to the limits on payload then I was comfy with. Sooooo..... found a good deal, crunched the numbers and score! Talked him into it. He is really happy with the new truck. New to us 2009 GMC 2500HD 6.6L Deisel 4X4. Now if I can just get all the numbers down to squeeze a new fiver into the budget....

this is funny hearing a wife having to talk the husband into a new truck. Its usually the other way round. Kristi slow down on the 5er give him a few months... We towed the TT several years with the diesel before I even thought about the 5er, then it was almost 2 years worth of research(begging and pleading ) on 5ers before we finally got one.

For me it has been years with 250/350 but, I remember how much better the they pull than any 1/2 tons I had. Until you drive a turbo pulling a rv you just cannot image the difference. Now the new 1/2 tons are not like the old ones I had but, the new tubos diesels have alot more power than my o1.

Kristi, Don't listen to Randy ..... Strike while the iron is hot. I can see a 5er on the back of that new to you GMC. I don't want to be the only one getting in trouble around here.

2-3 years is about what we are looking at also, get the last 2 kiddos outta the house & start looking at rear living options rather then the bunkhouse. Not that I don't love our passport, cause I do. Just like the way a 5er pulls.

About time they get out the house and you buy a rear living area 5er, after getting rid of the quad bunk house TT they come home from the Air Force and then from college and they want to go camping with you again.. ASK me how I know this???
The oldest well she and her husband just bought themselves a rear bunk house 5er for them and the grandson with an outdoor kitchen.

5er
We bought a four year old, gently used 28' 5er below the line a couple of years ago. Already had the diesel for awhile. The towing is slightly different but easy. Once you get there, the 5er comes to life. Tons more living and carrying space. I would recommend an upgraded pin box, world of difference.
Boy, can you tell I'm tired of the snow and want to get on the road.

You are probably right, by the time the last 2 are outta here, another 1 will be finishing up collage & 1 finishing his first Navy tour.

I totally understand and relate to your thinking process Kristi. We upgraded to a new to us 2006 F350 this winter and finally had a nice enough weekend to venture out with the Passport for an early spring shake down. The truck pulled the Passport like it wasn't even back there . We are also thinking of a 5er in a couple of years. I fell in love with the Montana High Country 343RL while at an RV show last month. The DH loved it also, so he is already on board with a future 5er. We hope to be able to do a lot more traveling in a couple of years and would like the extra room and comfort the 5er's offer. I love my Passport and will be happy to stay with it until the time comes for a change.

We just traded up from our 06 F350. If there was a couple things I would suggest to owners of 6 litres Fords it would be buy a pyrometer and change the radiator fluid every year. The Navistar 6 litre has a reputation as a troubled engine. We replaced two turbos, intercooler and a high pressure oil pump all under warranty. We were pulling about 12k lbs up high mountain roads. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the suggestions Fred1609. We will certainly make sure the radiator fluid is changed out every year. I certainly hope we can get many more miles on this truck before we have to consider upgrading.

Went out yesterday evening and adjusted the equalizer hitch for the bigger truck and took the new set up for a drive. Wow what a difference! It just feels so much better going down the road. As some of you know Oklahoma isn't exactly known for its smooth as glass roadways.... Can't wait till next weekend when we are taking it out for the first trip of the season! Momma is a happy camper.

We upgraded from a 1/2 ton to 3/4 ton over the winter as well. Can I ask what type of adjustments did you need to make for the equalizer hitch?

We had to flip the hitch shank to drop the ball 2 inches to make up for the difference in truck height. After that, everything else was good.
