Big brothers know better

Funny story to share. My brother and fellow Keystone RV owner called me tonight to say he put a deposit down on a 2012 Ram1500 Laramie Hemi 3:55 axle to tow a new toy hauler TT with gvwr of 8000 lbs he is about to purchase. He currently tows a 6500 lb TT with a Durango (another story).
I asked him what the gvwr of the ram was and he said he didn't know but it tows 10,000 lbs. After I finished chuckling, I told him to find out what the gvwr on the truck was (I knew it would be around 1200). He called me back and said it was 1200 lbs. I explained that the tongue weight of his future 8k toy hauler TT would be 13% or around 1100 lbs and as long as he carried no passengers, hitch, cargo in the truck and he weighed less than 100 lbs he is as good to go.
After a long silence, he said I will have to look into this. Lol
long story short, he ended up calling truck dealer cancelling the sale on the Ram and decided on a f150 ECO boost with 1800 gvwr. I told him he needed a 3/4 but close enough.
I just thought I would share this as so many people don't understand that payload is the most important for actor when matching an rv to a tow vehicle. There must be 2 or 3 posts a week on this topic in this forum.

Although not in disagreement but when he loads the rear of the toy hauler the tounge weight will go down due to the extra weight in back, they say they are done that way on purpose and I did find it on keystones site.

Make sure you have him read up on sway and so forth of the toy hauler tt , many have said they have to put water in fresh tank to make it right

I also explained to him that a light tongue also is not good (sway) and that for optimum towing of a TT he should maintain the 13% tongue weight rule of thumb.

I would highly recommend a Hensley or Propride hitch. I will be ordering mine soon. Even though I have dialed in my hitch and weights, I am upgrading. I have a few reasons for the upgrade...safety and piece of mind while towing are two. Also when you figure what has been spent on truck and TT the cost of a no sway hitch is not much. My TT dealer talked me out of that hitch when we bought last year. Again my current set up feels 95% good, but I want the 99%.

not sure what Ram 1500 he has with a 1200GVWR.... must be made of cardboard and balsa wood... betcha its great on gas!

No it was a pimped out loaded one, with factory bed rail tool boxes. All of the options stole the payload.
