Albuquerque (to Durango)

I'm heading to Durango in July. I was looking to stop near Albuquerque. It might just be an overnight stop now. It doesn't look there's much to do/see in that area. Should I just avoid it all together? I can go through Santa Fe, but was looking for something new. I've been up to Pagosa (via Santa Fe) a few times in the past years.

Any suggestions on decent parks? I was looking east to stay at a little higher elevation.

We go through Durango every year from Texas and usually stay at the KOA on the east side of Albuquerque or the one on the north side of Albuquerque. For a one night stay either one are very good campgrounds.

Route 66 Casino just west of Abq has a very nice, very large RV park with very long pull thrus, inexpensive if you go inside to get their players card. Also a very good buffet & a shuttle to the casino for something do.
Isleta casino also a RV park on the south edge of town, haven't stayed there.
Have stayed at American RV Resort on the west edge of town, very nice.
Have stayed at the KOA in Bernillio north of town when attending the Balloon Fiesta.

I took this copy/paste from the Isleta website this AM:
Isleta Lakes & RV Park Now Open!
We are excited to announce that Isleta Lakes & RV Park is now open! We have been working diligently to ensure health and safety measures are met to provide a safe and welcoming environment. We ask that social distancing, face coverings and directional signage be followed at all times during your stay with us.
Might be worth a call.

If you like craft beer, the KOA in Bernalillo, north of Abq has a gate to the a brewery right next door...very safe and convenient.

We have always turned north at Clines Corner and gone through Santa Fe. But I'm going to try something different. We have the month of August reserved on Vallecito Lake north of Bayfield. I'm thinking about going to ALBQ and taking 550 north to Durango. Gotta be easier than those hard pulls going north around Chama to Pagosa.
I was thinking about Coronado Campground at Bernalillo. Any opinions?

Not sure Coronado SP is open for camping yet, you should check.
Also, there are a few hard pulls up 550 also, but your Ram should have no problems.
We used to go to Vallecito when I was a kid, great memories, though last time, not so much.

We took the kids to Vallecito about 20-24 years ago. Daughter caught a fine trout where the creek dumps into the lake. Had a crowd cheering her. I rode a horse with a pack string up near Popes nose. So saddle sore. LOL
Used to elk hunt just west of Williams Creek Reservoir.
I'm mostly looking for altitude to beat Houston heat.
Those pulls around Chama/Chromo were a strain for 1982 F250 300 six cylinder with a cabover and towing a utility trailer. Pretty good strain on a 1987 Class C with a 460 as well.
I'm a sentimental old fool and miss my old hunting grounds.
On further examination the KOA next to the brewery sounds pretty good.
Anything about Vallecito in particular change your mind about it? Vallecito Resort specifically. Blue Spruce was booked.

Good times...I used to have a 1981 F150 with a 300 six and 2.75 open rear end. What a dog. Swapped in a 351W with an RV cam and 4.11 rear posi..fixed!
A few years ago at the store near the lake, my wife and I were profiled and followed around as if we were shoplifters. YMMV depending on how you look? Sad world...
We camped w/o hookups somewhere lakeside. Don't remember catching a lot of fish like when I was a kid.
Sounds like you a going to have a great vacation though and yeah, craft beer always helps along the way!

I initially planned to stay at the Stagecoach Stop RV Park in Albuquerque. As of now, I have a reservation for Riana (Abiquiu Lake). I would be coming through Santa Fe. It is currently closed and might open after the 4th. If not, I'll start looking for a backup in Chama, Santa Fe, or Albuquerque.

On a side note. An RV park in Roswell mentioned that they have a 50% capacity limit for the state. I called another and got a reservation.

^^Have you stayed at Stagecoach before? I have it on my short list. Good/bad?
I looked at the Coronado web site and they are doing 50% occupancy.

I haven't stayed there. It looks like a good place to stop (location mainly).

Not sure I'll be staying anywhere in NM. I just posted in the COVID subforum, but NM restricted travel by vehicle until the 15th.

Let's see, early '80's a 300 IL6 was between 100-120 hp with 223 ft. lbs. torque That's when they lowered compression and choked down the engines to meet the EPA requirements. Ford stuck that six in almost every conversion van that was popular in the day. If you turned on the A/C you couldn't climb up a 1% grade. The "muscle" cars of the area were all show and no go.

So true Marshall. We towed a pop up with the 6, but when we got a very small 5th wheel it was all played out. lol

Had a couple of those Ford IL6s at work, they couldn't pull your hat off & we hated them in snow/mud as you would be stuck & unable to spin a tire.
The Chevy's with the big 6, as they called them, were much more capable as far power, you could lug them & keep going.

I don't know but my elk hunting buddy said the 300 pulled about as good as his Chevy 350. Granny gear came in handy.
When I sold it the rear axles were singing the blues and it would jump out of gear going over RR tracks.
But it served us well. Carried that old cabover to the Texas hunting lease about every weekend, all over Arkansas, Colorado,Yellowstone and the Dakotas.
