Fortuna CA to Red Bluff CA

Has anyone travelled from Fortuna CA to Red Bluff CA in late October if so how are the weather conditions we have been told that the road is slow and very twisty but will we run into snow?

Snow in late October, probably not, but nothing is certain. In normal weather years there will be plenty of rain at that time that can create road issues, slides and washouts through those hills.

Not just curves and twists but a real bit** to drive pulling anything more than an eighteen foot TT at any time of year. I know there will be some that say "I drove my 40' DP on that road with no trouble". Well good for them but my 2 cents worth says please consider another route.

Don't know your intended destination but consider highway 299 from Arcata to Redding or highway 20 from Calpella to Williams, far, far better choices.

Highway 299 a good two lane with passing and offers 4 mountain passes, two of them at about 2500 feet and the other two at about 4500 feet. In late Oct. snow shouldn't be an issue but storms do blow in. Worst case, probably delayed a few hours while roads are cleared of snow.

Highway 20 no mountains but a somewhat slow drive south from Fortuna on 101. Highway20 is all two lane but good road over to I-5.

Scenery wise take 299.

Good travels and enjoy

Thanks for the advice our final destination is Hemet but as we have lots of time we want to travel down the west coast but don't want to deal with the heavy traffic in San Francisco and LA

Don't take hwy 36 as mentioned before. Im from Eureka, and although I love 36, I wouldn't want to tow anything bigger than 20 ft. Take 299, or go south to hwy 20 near Ukiah, and that will take you to Williams on I-5. 299 is very scenic, but there are to grades ro climb that can kill an older tow vehicle.
