Interesting tow vehicle

I will say I have not seen this combination in motion yet. It is going to be interesting to see it get out of the park as it is up a decent hill, and according to the other host they had a hard time on a lesser slope in the park.

Started looking up homemade conversions and found this…I wonder if any of these rigs ever have to pass inspection? What happens in an accident when a fifth wheel body sheers off a homemade trailer followed closely by an airborne jeep?
I do like thinking outside the box though and if it keeps people happy dreaming up these contraptions, then more power to them

When you're on the road RV'ing from place to place you see a number of things that just make you shake your head. This is one of them! I'd like to see a couple of up close photos, Russ.

I have seen at least one like in post 3 but it was shorter.
I think it was a factory Big Tex trailer the guy mounted a truck camper on and off road vehicle behind it. If I seen one while working I would have liked to check out how well the RV is attached and weigh the combo. Without looking up regs. I think it would fall under tie down rules same as other attached loads, so need 1 tie down at every xx feet. If I remember right the jeep would need 3, many use 2 and tie down at four points. But I am not looking that up, its just on memory, I could be wrong.
The rules problem is you have rules for RVs and rules for non RVs being pulled.
This would come under a heavy trailer (over 10,000 lb) rule. Not many weight cops would even want to figure it out.

Yep, that's an interesting tow vehicle, for sure.

About the photo in post #3?

That actually is a very "slick" way to get around a lot of issues. That is actually a utility trailer. At least, in Indiana, a utility trailer registration and license plates are dirt cheap compared to the cost of an automobile or an RV.

So, re-fab the fifth wheel and place it on a utility trailer. The fifth wheel is now "cargo" and as far as registering it as an RV, it's not needed as it's being transported on a trailer and not actually touching the ground.

In a way, that's a pretty slick way to get around some rules and laws and still have a fully functional RV.

You can "get around some rules" but in doing so, you "MIGHT" wind up "smack in the middle of more stringent rules".... One that comes to mind is the 26,000 max weight exemption in many states for RV's. If the rig in post #3 is a "utility trailer" then the "RV exemption" no longer applies and licensing to tow it might well cause an otherwise "exempt rig" to suddenly become vulnerable to more restrictive rules.

It's an interesting rig, but....... Some "thorough researching on what applies and what's exempt" would definitely be in order for most "one off rigs".....

Same idea, just on a smaller scale. I took this photo at Summit Lake State Park (Indiana) about 5 years ago. Just an FYI.

At least in my past job and state, your right the post #3 RV is no longer a trailer, it's a load on a trailer. But when you read the pages of regs. It might still need a RV license plate. Oregon defines in RV trailer as having living quarters. They use paragraphs to define that. And it is pulled, pushed (never seen that one) or drawn upon a public road needs licensed. That RV is drawn or moved on a public in Oregon by and Oregon resident it still needs to be licensed.
Other states may exempt that law.

In Oregon a non RV trailer over 10,000 lbs is licensed as a heavy trailer not a utility trailer. Those plates go with a tow vehicle that is licensed as a truck.
Pickup plates run about 150 for 2 years, Truck plates pay by gross weight to be carried and start over 200 a year. The RV is still needed to be licensed, in Oregon by length. My 27 ft was 195 for 2 years.

I think that combo is good in the fact it gets around the "no double tow rule" that most states have. At 65 ft it is good for max length non comm. vehicle combo also.
So, it might be saving licensing fees in some states, but at the same time looking at enforcement and laws regarding more in the Trucks in the 10,000 plus class with a non RV trailer over the 10,000 lb class. That's the class before 26,001 lbs. class unless the combo is over that.
My understanding of the 10,000 lb truck and 10,000 lb trailer rules come from the idea that those sizes of trucks and trailers are normally hauling or carrying for hire or construction vehicles or farming vehicles. Law makers did not think about stacking them with toys.

So, I really said the same things as John but tried to explain why as shortly as I could.

Well it moved today, took two tries to get out of site and up the hill to the top of the loop. It managed to get enough speed up on a short flat to get over the second hill.

Thanks, Russ. Ya done good, fella! If I'm at least close, that old model Holiday Rambler grosses at about 17K. The modified Urban Assault Vehicle towing it probably was designed to tow a small vehicle in the 3-4K range. Anybody care to guess what the transmission fluid temperature reached before they peaked the hill?
I can't imagine the time and money this person had in the modification to end up with a vehicle worth next to nothing, only something we all laugh at and take pictures for Reddit!

There is a whole movement going on now with cargo van conversions into camper vans…school bus conversions etc…a lot of these people aren’t qualified to build a fort out of blankets in their living room that wont collapse.

The photo is there, in post #1. There are also two more photos of that same rig in post #10. If you're not seeing photos, check your device settings and preferences, you've got something "set wrong".....

The photos in posts 1, 8 and 10 are an integral part of the post. They are not a "clickable attachment" like the photo in post #3. Your settings are likely the reason you can't see photos that are a part of the post but can see photos that are "attached to the post"....

Jasin, I'm absolutely appalled that you would say that about people. Why just today I saw a photo of an individual trying a setup to help people learn how to back up trailers in a straight line.
