Water heater relief

Are water heater relief valves the same size as residential. Mine has developed a drip and I am just wondering if it something I can get at a Home Depot type store is is it RV specific? Thanks

Water heater relief

I had a screen short of one of the last pages of the Atwood service manual but there is a problem attaching it.

At any rate, your drip or weeping is the result of the lose of the air pocket in the top of the tank.

Turn off your city water, open the relief valve to allow some water out, restoring the air pocket. Turn everything back on. You should be ok.

Yes it is the same. Two different sizes so you might want to remove the old one.

A couple years ago, had to replace our water heater due to a crack in the tank. A new PRV was installed in the new water heater, and right from the beginning, once the air pocket was gone, it leaked like the one on the old water heater. So, all this to say, don't waste your money, the new one will leak too. You could install a small accumulator tank, and that will stop the leaking. What happens is, there is a check valve at your incoming water hose fitting that prevents pressure buildup in the system when the water is heated from going backwards. An air pocket in the water heater acts like an accumulator tank, because air can be compressed but water can not be compressed. So, it's either maintain the air pocket in the water heater, install an accumulator tank, or just not worry about a little water drip. https://www.amazon.com/SHURFLO-182-2.../dp/B000N9VF6Q

I had a drip from mine too, after de-winterizing. Running a bit of water out of the relief valve did the trick.

Sometimes a little debris will get lodged under it and cause a leak, just open it, let it flush a moment and close it. Also not having an air pocket can cause expansion (increased pressure). Turn off water, drain, refill. I'n any case I'd drain and flush the tank before replacing the pressure relief valve. If you have to replace it it's a standard NPT fitting (National Pipe Thread) so nothing magical about it.
