Converter Problem

Hello, I have Keystone 27 RSL. Had every problem associated with bad converter. Battery would not charge, lost lights.... replaced battery and worked for about six months. Symptoms started again. Replaced converter recently with same factory converter. Still will not charge battery or switch to sure power. Replaced battery again and new battery will power everything until it drains. Hook up a separate battery charger and it will keep me going.

Both new and old converter both have working fuses. Reverse direction fuses both are good. Dealer said there is nothing wrong with converter. Trying to get trough hunting season on sure power and can not. Any advice?

Welcome aboard! Sorry you're having this frustration. Maybe a couple things to check

1. Is there a breaker for the converter? We have one in our setup. Make sure it's on
2. Is there a battery cutoff switch? Is it on?
3. Have you tested the output of the converter with a multimeter to start tracing where the power stops?

Thank you for the quick and kind reply.

Breaker is on and I have proper voltage to the converter. However the converter fan never runs.

I just found out I have a cut of switch in the giggy box. I have never used it and don't know how it would turn off. I stayed in camper last week and using battery charger, everything worked. If switch were off, would anything work? I will check it.

I checked power out of converter and have nothing on both old and new converter.

Any idea what tells converter to send power out?

Thank you again for you assistance.

If the converter is receiving 120v then it is producing 12v out - probably closer to 14v. If it's on it's working. Are you sure the 120v circuit powering the converter is working? If so then can you check the output of the converter to test for 12v?

I believe that the converter has a standard 120v plug. You should be able to plug that into any working outlet and have it work. If it's receiving power and not producing 12v then it sounds like it's bad.

I would clean every 12v electrical contact that I could access. Grounds are usually the cause especially those exposed to the elements.

Is your cut-of switch a red key. If the key can be removed, the battery is cut off. It will never charge from the converter. If the key can not be removed, the battery is on. It should charge and everything should work just fine.

I have seen converters receiving 120VAC but not producing any DC voltage due to internal failure. Only way to verify a converter is working is using a VOM.

If an external battery charger on his battery is successfully running his 12V systems, then his 12v network is OK. Problem is either a crap battery, a crap converter, or the connection between them. He's replaced both units with no joy, therefore, dig into that cable connection.
