Storage under the bed

Well I just picked up my new 2012 Avalanche 330RE. I'm looking to make storage under the bed It's screwed shut. I was wanting to know if anyone has pics on what they did or pics if there fifth wheel came with storage under there bed.

Thanks
Paul

If it’s screwed shut, there’s probably some part of an electrical or plumbing system in there. In mine, it’s the fresh water holding tank. Go ahead and open it up and take a look. It’s worth your while to know where everything is in your trailer.

It's most likely the slide-out mechanism for the bed. JM2¢, Hank

It's the slide-out mechanism for the bed. You may be able to store a little stuff. Mine was not screwed down. Have you got to use your coach yet. We purchased the avalanche 330re last Nov and it went straight to storage. Really excited to get started camping. We really like the 4 slides. Roomy....

As you can see, we have an Alpine. There is shallow storage under the bed. However, due to some of my ongoing mods, I need to remove the storage base today. It covers the hydraulic slide mechanism. I'll post a picture either tonight or early tomorrow to show you what is under there.

Paul -

Here are the pictures of the under-bed slide mechanism. The space between the piston and the rails is probably around 24 inches or less. The space between the rails and the bed sides is probably 12 inches or so on one side. I would dare say that if one found some containers and carefully placed them between the moving extents of the bedroom slide, it might make a deeper storage. You would probably also want to devise a method to prevent container movement during towing.

In the Under_Bed.jpg, you can see the support braces for the chipboard base of the shallow storage area I have. That "factory supplied" storage area is only about 6 inches deep, but works well with the Space Saver bags that you can pack your clothes, etc., in and then use the vacuum to compress/shrink the bag volume.

The Caster_Roller is how the foot of the bed is supported on the floor. The caster is what leaves the carpet tracks. What you might like to know, when the slide is fully retraced, it rests on the side wall of the trailer and the castors - so it is fully supported (unlike the other slides). As we have slide awnings, when we are camped and the wind comes up at night (popping the awnings and making lots of noise), I just get up, retract the slides, do not step on the main or kitchen slides, and go back to bed!

I do have to admit, it is tempting to think about using the "extra" space between the rails and piston. In the pictures, you can see the 120V and 12V lines for power and lights. It was the 120V coupling near the top of the Under_Bed.jpg that was disconnected and was the reason we had no power in the night stand duplex receptical. The hydralic line and power lines drop into the front storage/generator compartment to the right of the piston head. This was quite a surprise for me as I thought they dropped into the storage basement! Since the front storage us unheated and is separated from the under bed area by only a thick sheet of chipboard with openings, it certainly answers the question of why the bed base and closet have been so cold! I plan to insulate that area with pink foam board and will post the process later.

Hope this helps you and others.

Ron

PS - I'm installing a Sirius radio antenna connection in the nightstand and routing it along the electric lines access route.
