Extra Garage Cabinet in Cougar 325SRX

When I first got my Cougar 325SRX, I wondered why they only built one cabinet on the "driver's side" of the garage. We initially wanted to order a matching one along with other items but got the "talk to parts afterwards.."

In January I was at the dealer looking at a few odds and ends stumbled across a pile of cougar cabinet doors being sold as "seconds". I couldn't see a single thing wrong with them, matched my garage cabinet door size and color exactly. No cabinet hardware or hinges but with a price of $10 bucks each couldn't be beat it. They were originally stickered at over $50 each. They also sold lengths of laminated cherry wood which was used to make the front cabinet face.

The cabinet itself is pretty simple design, build two sides (front and bottom) and the rest is made up of "trailer". You'll see what I mean from the picture. Easiest thing was to build the front elsewhere, measure to fit and screw it into the ceiling joists and sidewalls. (Width was 48 & 3/4" Wide, but these RV's are not exactly square..) Had to cut the trim that ran flush with the ceiling so it would fit tight. The Bottom was created by screwing 1/2" strips of plywood around bottom edge all 4 sides. Left an 1/8" inch so the cherry laminate would be flush from bottom outside. Then glued and stapled two
1/8" pieces of cherry laminated plywood to it. One inside the cabinet, one on the bottom of the cabinet.

So here's how the orignal looks:

Now the nearly finished otherside:

Got the cabinet doors on this evening, but didn't get a chance to take a picture yet will post later. I bought similar door hinges at the local hardware store. Clamped a piece of wood for doors to rest on as a guide for the cabinet door install height. Installed the left and right door using measurements from the original cabinet. Also installed the roller latches so they stay shut. Once the left and right doors were on, repeated same steps and finished. Good project, now I have doubled my garage storage space, and it looks factory installed.

Now just need 3 matching cabinet door handles. I haven't asked the dealer yet how much they'll cost. If they're a fortune, I might move the 3 from the bathroom so garage looks identical. Then I can just replace bathroom with a similar style or anything for that matter. Nobody matches everything in their how why should an RV be different..

If anyone knows where to buy cougar rv parts online like these cabinet handles, I'd appreciate the link..

O my....

Your kill'in me here.... What an awesome job. This past weekend I was standing in the bay showing my pop the new unit.... and thought how nice another set of cabinets would be on the opposite wall. Wish I had your skills with the wood working! If it's out of steel and fabrication, I'm in for the adventure, the wood mod's just don't come out so professional, so my wife (rightfully so) puts the nixx on those ideas! Great job Maxx, well done. Look forward to the finished pics.

Doors and Handles Added

Update from the project. I was able to track down the handles using the part number the dealer gave me. Otherwise they would have cost a fortune. Ended up getting 3 handles for the same price as one.
