Gatlinburg/ Pigeon Forge camping
The wife and I are looking to try this area this year for a closer quick getaway. Any recommendations for campgrounds?

We just stayed at Pine Mountain campground in Pigeon Forge. Very nice. They had the best online review ratings.

We just stayed there this past October for a week, we stayed at Twin Mountain Campgrounds. We liked this campground and would probably stay there again if we was to go back down there. The campgrounds is on the south end of town and is between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Like most of the campgronds in the area it is a little tight but if you stay on the back side of the campgrounds the sites are good size and pretty easy to get in and out of. The campground also is on the trolley route and has a stop in the middle of the campgrounds. The campground is small and is pretty quit being far enough off the main road that you don't get any road noise but yet close enough to some restrants and stores that you can walk to them.

+ one on river plantation. Busy street though. Not that close to Gatlinburg. I think it is in Sevierville but it is a very nice area.

We stayed at claboughs last summer and realy enjoyed it.
We stayed for five days. We stayed in the back section by the creek to get away from the road noise. They have a nice pool and lazy river and is only about 10 or 15 min. from doly wood.

Sounds like a lot of these camp grounds are near the main strip and tend to be noisy unless you get to the backside of them.

Smokey Bear CG is great. Relatively smaller...not a expansive cg and the owners are tremendous..no exaggeration. Sites are manicured...landscaping is excellent. Has a pool. Not that I have anything against kids......but since a cpl of other more kid friendly cgs are nearby Smokey Bear is not overrun with kids like a Jellystone might be. Close to Gatlinburg and the Natl Park entrance. I highly recommend Smokey Bear. We stayed there in July 2012 with a group of about 8 and loved it. Even our grand dauhhter of 7 had a great time there. When we go back...that is where we would stay.

We have stayed here twice in the summer months, both times I thought I was at my house with the heat and humidity. Went to the mountains to get away from all that.. BUT nope just the same temps and humidity as home. BUT they have nice creek that runs around the property and its cool and refreshing. It was nice too. It is located right the the Seiverville/Pigeon Forge city limits. A little away from all the action(traffic) but close to it too.
We also have stayed at Clayboughs on Wears Valley road 3 times and we enjoyed there too.

DH and I are in the process of booking a week in May for "Up The Creek RV Camp in the Smokies". It is a small campground sitting between 2 creeks off Wears Valley Road, just outside of Pigeon Forge. They have full hookups, but no facilities such as restrooms, bath houses, pool, or laundry. For the most part it has very good reviews on campgroundreviews.com. This will be our first visit to Up the Creek. We normally stay at Mountaineer Campground in Townsend, TN which we love, but needed to be nearer to Pigeon Forge this go around.
Good Luck, and I hope you find the perfect campground for your camping needs

If you are looking to get away from the hustle & bustle of the area you might consider the campgrounds in Townsend (see campgroundreviews.com), billed as the "quite side of the mountain". Being a flyfisherman this is my preferred location.

Riverside Campground
We've been staying at Riverside Campground for the last three years and have been very happy with the place. We like it so much that we now leave our camper there full time instead of pulling it the 90 miles back to our home.
The campground is one of the first ones you come to after you exit I-40 on the way to Pigeon Forge. This makes it very easy to access without having to deal with the traffic between Sevierville and Pigeon Forge.

We have reservations at "Camping in the Smokies" CG on Easter weekend. East of Gatlinburg. Haven't been there before.
