Triple towing with a 1/2 ton

My neighbor has a '14 Jayco 228 travel trailer which is nearly identical to my 238ML. The layout is identical to mine except his has triple bunks in the back and mine has double. They are both ultra lites and aren't meant to have anything attached to the back.

I noticed yesterday that he has added a receiver hitch to the back. I thought to myself that he was going to add a bike rack because he and his wife have a couple young boys and they take trips quite often. Others here have done it and the sky hasn't fallen, or else they haven't said that it has.

I noticed today that he had not in fact added a bike rack. He had hooked up a new aluminum double-motorcycle trailer with a full front screen and two Harley Davidson's on it. All of this was hooked up to this '13 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4x4. My guess is he's heading to Sturgis with some friends. I sure hope he makes it there without any issues!

I should have snapped a picture.

Well why not? Probably has a bagged and deleted Chevy and carries his drone in the pass through.

Well he won't be overloaded on his hitch/rear axle weight. He's probably exceeding the max tow capacity of the truck though. On the bright side, two Harleys and a small aluminum trailer combined is still probably quite a bit less than 2,000 lbs.

As another 238ML owner I believe he is probably overloading his Jayco too. I'd never consider adding that kind of weight behind my 2014 Silverado 1500 4x4.

So it's two bumper pulls? Where is that legal in the U.S.?

Yes, in some of the mountain states and some of the northwest states allow double towing (two trailers) with the front trailer being a bumper pull or a fifth wheel/gooseneck. I've seen 3 or 4 in ND, SD and WY on this trip. I've also seen some "trains" with 3 trailers behind commercial trucks. Some of the triples on the road from Arco to Twin Falls today were at or very close to 100' in length. Most were hauling hay and were at or slightly above the speed limit as they passed most of the RV's on the road

John, as far as vehicles and equipment farm vehicles are except from nearly all normal vehicle and comm vehicle laws. In Oregon they are plated with a license that starts with F for farm vehicle but, police say that means forget it when enforcing vehicle laws. Speeding that is different but, they can go very slow when you or I would be cited for impeding traffic.

Most states require a CDL to tow two trailers, regardless of the size. Farm equipment may be different.

MN you can only double pull with a fifth wheel but I would never do it with a half ton truck.

I'm aware of the triples, seen them in Oregon and Wyoming, but only in OTR trucks. And I think they use Pintle hitch not ball and tongue.

I found a "law aggregater" that listed triple-towing, even with bumper pulls, legal in many states. It did note that some states only allow it for 5th wheels, though.

In Oregon when you look up towing 2 or more trailers it is only allowed with a comm. vehicle and permits. But, several years ago they started permitting transporters to pull 2 trailers. There seen on I-84 coming towards Portland. Only ones I seen were pulling 2 TTs. I have not looked up the law to get details. A transporters is easy to spot the TV must have the name etc. on the doors and each trailer is brand new with a special plate that has TR(transporter) like a car dealer puts on vehicles to move them without licensing or titling.

Leaving Heber City, Utah this morning, we were stopped at a rest area where the state was doing a 100% boat check. What pulled up, but just what we have been talking about. Here's a picture of a "recent model Chev half ton with a 26' travel trailer and a 22' pontoon boat on a trailer behind that. So, since he was in a government check station and they passed him through, apparently Utah, along with Wyoming and Colorado (that I know for sure) allow double trailer towing with a travel trailer as the first towed unit.

Either that or he got a rookie that wasn't versed in the law. Being an LEO and having a CLEAR understanding of ALL the rules can be daunting.

Not saying the officer didn't know, it might be legal but I worked with some of the smoothest talkers there were for years.

Here they started the boat road side inspections. The state police would not do them. The state marine board then started hiring part time, mostly retired police to do them. They are only enforcing the boat law regarding transporting of illegal water bugs. In Utah, it could be the same, they may not be able to enforce anything else.
