maine to nashville with a couple of questions
Hello, been lurking on the site for a bit. Wife and I are headed to Montgomery Bell state Park this may. We are planning to stay at the Delaware Gap Koa, looking at the map we would like to travel on rt 209, then cruise over to 80 , then pick up 81 and head south. Next stop would be the natural bridge koa. Any thoughts or input on rt 209 and rt 80 in pa? . Also. , has anybody stayed at Montgomery bell state park? Wife and I would appreciate any input
Thank you

From near Allentown area and familiar with that area of PA. PA 209 is not highway and has twists and turns. If I were driving that area I would take 80 to 81 OR take 476 to PA 78 then head west to 81. You can maintain highway speeds and probably make the trip just as fast and much easier than by using PA 209. Just a preference. I prefer predictable interstates over side roads. Will use side roads with RV gps if traffic backed up.
Note...FYI...Rt 11 parallels RT 81 for most of VA. RT 11 is a good way to get around traffic tie ups on Rt 81. Caution...there is a low pedestrian overpass on Rt 11 by a college...rv gps should have it or check Good Sam Trip Planner. Our TT made it under but a very tall 5er will have an issue.

Have you considered coming down thru Ct. crossing the Tappan Zee bridge, getting on rt 287 south to rt 80 west? On rt 287 and rt 23 there is a Walmart on rt 23 north plus gas, restaurants, were I have seen trailers staying, if your that kind of person.
We are from northern NJ and have been going to your area in Maine for 3 years now. You should expect about 6 hrs +- to that Walmart. If you want to continue to Pa. the Gap is (pulling a tt) about 1 1/2+- hours more depending on traffic. Rt 80 you have to get off to gas up, plenty on rt 23.
Our choice of campgrounds by the Gap is Otter Lake Campground/Resort.
Hope this helps
Brian

OK. Thanks for the input. We have Good Sam's road side protection, but have'nt tried the trip planer yet. I'll spend sometime with a map, and look into all the above suggestions. I'm nt sure why I got onto the rt 209 thing. I'll look into the other campgrounds as well. We have driven to Tennessee many times but have never hauled the fifth wheel out of state before. We have never stayed at a koa either by thought they would be good for just a quick overnite deal. Were kinda new to camping. Thanks again

OK, looked over the map a bit, I'm not a big fan of 84 thru CT. We may take 90west then hit 87 south, then to 84 towards 81. Any suggestions for cg on 84. Trying to keep the first day to 4-500 miles. Thanks again

Otter Lake is a very nice CG but access is tight....both coming in from the north and esp headed south out. Perhaps with a 5er it would be easier. I felt cramped on the blind curves when we stayed there with our 19'TT. Haven't stayed there with the longer TT yet.
The KOA at Wytheville VA (where I-81 and I-77 intersect is a great quick in and out CG. We would never stay there otherwise due to site size but we often spend the night there on our trips to/from the Smokies or Nashville. There is a Flying J right at the exit as well so one stop for gas and sleeping. Some just park in the Flying J lot but I prefer less hustle/bustle while we are trying to sleep.
Another good in and out CG on the I 81 corridor is the Battle of Cedar Creek CG near Strasburg. It is on Rt 11. It is like a pit stop in NASCAR..get off 81 an exit north/south and get back on 81 an exit south/north. People are very nice. CG is not fancy but access is good/easy rate is very good.

Yes we camp. We will be in the Boothbay Harbor area this year.
The Tappan Zee traffic is into the city in the morning for a few hours and out of the city (NYC) in the afternoon. One way to avoid traffic is to travel on a weekend.

I'll check out battle creek cg. Sounds good for a quick overnite deal. Where in Nashville do you stay? The tapnzee bridge has never been an issue for you guys? I'm a bit nervous about it. We may do the rt90 deal. Ill look over the above suggestions tonight. Thanks

We stay at the Cedar Creek CG in Mt Juliet just a few min east of Nashville. It is a US Army Corps of Engs lake/facility on Old Hickory Lake. Can see details on www.recreation.gov site or just google it. Highly recommend this CG if staying near Nashville. This will be our 3rd year there...family get together every mid-May. Always very happy when we stay there...roomy sites...great views by the lake. See pic attached.

Yeah. That sounds real nice, we have a site reserved at Montgomery bell state park. Have heard mixed things about it. I'll check out your suggestion. Were headed to TN in mid may
