Your Job, or what was your Job

Just wondering what everyone does/did for a living. I myself have been in the coating business for 40+ years, everything from all paints, stains, automotive coatings, testing and applying. Currently i run the "paint" department at a Automotive Leather company, yes Leather is painted. Got less than a year and i am done!!!!!

I started my apprenticeship in Auto body repair, 3/4 the way through a wicked recession in 1982 helped me decide it was too dirty and not stable enough for me. There was no PPE in that era. Moved on to work in the rinks, which lead to larger multi use facilities. Been doing that since. My title is Facility Operations Coordinator.
Great benefits, stable and recession proof, ok money. I had 16 weeks vacation in the bank last year and I have 240 days sick time in the bank.
4 yrs to go.
* I was eligible to retire in April 2019, divorce is a wonderful thing

I work for plywood manufacturer that supplies 75% of the plywood used in the RV and marine industry as well as many other high end "niche" plywood markets. Why make $12 a sheet CDX when you can make a $50-$100 panel with the same resources?

Anyway, I'm a department lead on graveyard. Been there 15 years. Pay is good, insurance is good, retirement is good. 5 weeks of vacation a year.

I could have gone to day shift years ago, but I prefer working nights. Less drama, less bullcrap to deal with.

Edit: My wife is an Xray Tech for local hospital. We started having kids later in life than most people. We're 41 years old, house is paid off, vehicles paid off, beefing up our retirement nicely. We plan to retire as soon as our youngest is out of the house. We could probably retire by about 50 years old, but might as well stick it out until all the kids are gone. That will put us retiring at about 55 maybe 56.

I've primarily been a Journeyman Maint. Electrician since 1980. I'm hanging it up in a few months (April 30th is my retirement date) and going to pursue the job of retirement. So far, the only downside that I'm hearing about that is related to retirement is that I will NEVER have a scheduled day off, as I have now!

Sr. Estimator for commercial general contractors going on 42 years. I would love to retire but I have been at this company for 10 years and it is the best company I have ever worked for. The pay is great, the jobs I get to work on are fabulous and every job is different from the last one I worked on and I’m having fun doing it. This year I started working more from home so I don’t fight traffic everyday. The health insurance is too good to walk away from. Lord willing and if the creek don’t rise - I plan to do it 5 more years then retire.

Lots of odd jobs during my youth then went into the Army for 3 years into the Army Security Agency. After getting out, next 24 years working for a component of the DOD; mostly overseas. Then retired under the watch of the greatest man in American history, WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON! Anyway, he offered all mid level/senior level civilian folks in the DOD early retirements and my overseas time counted for a bit more than normal due to locations and thus I retired in my 40s in 1995 with a lifetime pension. Worked up in Austin for IBM then Crossroads Systems (obscure It stuff) then in San Antonio for IBM again contracted to AFC Enterprises doing IT stuff. They owned Churches, Popeyes, Seattles Best Coffee and other restaurant chains. It stuff was back end for transaction processing and inventory on UNIX servers (AIX). I was the data recovery/backup admin and also did AIX admin (only two of us). IBM lost the contract to another company with an IT arm and instead of trying to find another IT job, went into business selling and rebuilding vintage Japanese motorcycle carburetors around 2005 and have been at it ever since. My business name is wiredgeorge Motorcycle Carburetors; check us out on the web. Gives me something useful to do during the day otherwise I would watch Judge Judy all day long.

Been around trucks and equipment my whole life. Started out of school driving delivery truck for a meat market. Went on to drive ready-mix truck for 14 years along with gravel trucks, front end loaders, rock crushers, etc. Finished off driving highway trucks mostly on the west (wet) coast down to California, etc. until 9-11 when it became too much of a pain going back and forth over the border. Wound down in Pacific Northwest (BC) until retiring 2 years ago.

Currently, I have three full time jobs and one part time job:

1. Retired, full time
2. Driveway snow removal operator, full time (in summer, this changes to grass growing monitor)
3. Fox News monitor, full time
4. Great Grand Father, part time.

I honestly wonder how I ever found the time for a 5th (career, bill paying job) with so little free time to devote to work.....

I'd really like to move that part time job to the full time list (to replace #2 and 3), but we're in northern Michigan and GGD is in southern Ohio.....

I served in the Marine Corps for eight years and I was the assistant foreman on a 90 acre ranch in Northern California for the next 8 years. The ranch was a residential counseling facility for troubled teenagers. Part of my job was leading “outward bound” type backpacking trips in the Sierras. 15 day trip in the summer and a 4 day igloo building trip in the winter.

After all of that sleeping on the ground, I decided to buy a travel trailer. Best decision ever!

After Navy Reserves Electronics Tech school at Treasure Island, I hired on with Shell in Deer Park TX as a Process Operator. Hating the rotating shift work, I signed into the Millwright/Machinist apprenticeship program. Pulled wrenches on turbines, pumps, gearboxes, fans, compressors, and whatever the other crafts didn't want. Did a tour as a union steward, safety committee, and contract negotiating committee to alleviate the boredom. Then went to the "dark side" as foreman, inspector, and ended my 35 years as a Machinery Specialist. After a year of retirement I went back working contract mostly for Exploration & Production. A lot of time spent in south Texas (Laredo) installing natural gas compressors. Some time in Bellingham WA inspecting equipment for the doomed Arctic drilling project. Travelled all over the country looking at issues and witnessing initial runs of equipment for 5 years. Loved it.
Betty served 35 years teaching mostly pre-cal in high school and some part time community college. I don't think she loved it. LOL

My job, what was my job??

Like John, this retirement thing keeps me busy enough that I wonder how I ever had a full time job.

Current job is to:

1. Full time trying to make sure DW and I are having fun.

2. Full time maintenance man keeping up with main house and vacation homes.

3. Part time - traveling to those "fun" destinations about 8 mos. a year - which includes spending 5 months in FL with my DD and DGG plus time in TX with my son.

4. Part time professional "napper". (this is becoming more important as time passes).

What was my past job(s)?

When I was 13 started working in a grocery store as sacker/stocker on weekends and after school. Did that until I was about 16. Graduated high school at 17 and went to work for a civil engineer surveying, drawing up plats and running the survey crew. At 18 I went into the telecommunications industry, where I stayed until I retired after almost 40 years. Got to learn tons of stuff and do many things including being in on the front end of the technology explosion. I retired as a senior executive of a large corporation 14 years ago then entered the strenuous job duties listed above.

Grew up farming and joined the Air Force after college. Spent the twenty years following pilot training mostly flying KC10s, except for four years of 'career broadening' when the AF sent me to grad school and then to the Air Force Academy as Asst Prof of Chemistry. Eight moves and 26 countries visited later I retired. DW was a JAG in the AF and continued another 10 yrs in the AF Reserves. She liked lawyering; I liked fishing. We are now both retired (hence the TT) and I still like to fish.

I was in the military for a number of years and was introduced to computers at that time. I was also a pastor for over 20 years and worked secondary jobs in an number of service related industries. I eventually left the church and became a full time software test engineer where I've been doing this for some 20 years now also. I'm hoping to retire completely in about a year and a half.
