Hey chuckster…is it my imagination or lack of eyesight or is that inside rear tire wearing funny one the edge? Or did it used to be a front tire that you rotated?

Considering there is only about 20 miles on those tires, I doubt it. Long story, truck is currently on non op status.

I would love get some train horns, but boy are they pricey ! I've always wondered where everyone is mounting the horns? I don't want to put them on the top of the truck, and there isn't much room in the engine bay. So where does everyone mount them?

Train horn thoughts

I'm sure I'll get lambasted, but........as a railroad person I have to say that in most, if not all states the use of train horns is illegal. If you read the laws, most say that they are only legal, if used on a truck, and are part of an alarm system, NOT to be used while underway. Some states, if the vehicle is inspected and discovered to have train horns on it, can issue a fine for the violation. I do have to say, is it really worth it, especially in this day and age where road rage is the norm, not the exception? Blow one of these horns and you may have bullets flying back through your window! Chill out and enjoy the ride. The motorists you want to blow the horn at, will get the just dues...eventually. One other problem I should note; theft from real RR engines. It is an ongoing problem where the horns on our locomotives are getting stolen right off the cab. Costs thousands to replace them, not to mention the downtime while waiting for a new set to arrive (we can NOT move a locomotive without it's warning device (horns). Just my 5 cents worth (allowing for inflation) on the subject.

They are not that bad, I added a set of Klienn twin trumpet truck horns for less than $100.

The next set will be the “real deal” 5 trumpet Nathan’s exactly like the ones on a locomotive- about $1400.00 last time I looked and can be heard 3 miles away.

Great moments of the history of man....
1. Learned how to build a fire
2. Learned how to build houses instead of living in caves.
3. Invention of the IC engines.
4. Invention of the chainsaw
5. Installing Train horns/ship horns on trucks.

Train horns

That sounds a bit pricey, I found 2 big truck air horns, and a small tank plus Viair compressor.
A little creativity and a few hundred dollars

7 grand for horns? I had a conductor special plenty loud dual viair dual compressor 5 gallon tank. Could inflate tires and run air tools. I was in the entire system for under 1500 bucks.

Well my truck air horns are always on. Not a separate button, when I honk that is the horn I use.
Not sure if can do that with train horns and not get caught.

Motorcycle horns that claim to be loud such as the ones you mentioned are only loud compared to the tiny beep of a stock bike horn.

Terry, I suspect you won't get 'lambasted' on this forum unless you start to haul Montanas behind your 1500, or brag up Towmaster tires. I will agree that when with a group, family or not, I won't be 'flipping off, or honking loudly' at the average driver's or walker's mis-deed, but there comes a time when just dues comes around. And being honked at is a small price to pay for ignorant actions.
When I'm speeding (fairly often), or when I'm illegally triple-towing (on occasion), I'm willing to pay the piper. If I can afford say $1,200 for horns then I can afford the risk of a ticket.
I will say that I have never known an individual to be ticketed for loud horns, but keep in mind that I've also never known a Floridian who was ticketed for hanging 'bull nads' from his hitch, but there are county ordinances here with such a law. (Florida is not Wyoming, believe me)
See, wasn't that easy?

Train horns

True, it was "easy" but it ain't over yet! I guess I'm just coming from the RR side of things. Putting train horns on a vehicle (any vehicle) takes away from the true purpose of the horns, warning people that a train is coming. Kind of like putting a siren on your car, and you most likely WILL get a ticket for that. Technically, it is illegal but you are right in that probably no cop will give you a ticket, unless it happens to be the cop (in an unmarked car) that you honked at!
Carry on, everyone!

I had the option of wiring my train horns to the steering wheel horn. I chose not to because I felt not every situation dictated a “you really screwed up” honk. To each their own.

They are a “noise” violation, but when you consider the idiot next to you with a zillion watts thumping in the trunk, I have yet to see ANY law enforcement do anything about them, even when on the same street, so a short blast often times gets the volume lowered until we part ways

True. Another way to get the "boom box" thumper next to you to tone it down is to have a powerhouse stereo in your own vehicle, then open the window and play Henry Mancini or Guy Lombardo music. Gets them every time.........!!!
