Glenwood Springs to Cortez Colorado in August

I am planning trip from Arizona to Glenwood Springs, CO in our 35' Montana 5th Wheel in August. On the return trip I am considering taking hwy 82 south from Glenwood Springs to Carbondale, CO then hwy 133 from Carbondale to Delta, CO. Then US 50, US 550, Hwy 62, and Hwy 145 on into Cortez. I would like to here from people that are familiar with this route (particularly the hwy 82/133 section) about their opinion of taking this route with a truck and 16,000lb fifth wheel trailer.

If'n it was me I would roll on down I-70 to Grand Junction and then make the turn to Delta and beyond. That looks like a pretty long climb up over that pass.

Looks like a slow but interesting route. I've been on pieces of some of those roads but it's been quite a while. You have 3 passes at about 9000 feet each and LOTS of curvy roads so average speed will be quite low. Your engine brake will get a good workout on some of the downgrades! One thing for sure, if you take 160 west out of Cortez you will go through some of the most desolate land I have ever seen. Good luck on your journey.

It sounds like you will go over red mountain pass and while it is a beautiful and breathtaking route , be advised that there are many places along that grade with no shoulders and no guard rails and extremely steep ( read near vertical ) embankments . If you are the least bit faint of heart ( or whoever is sitting in the passenger seat ) you may want to consider going over lizard head pass instead . Its not that far out of the way and it is also a very scenic ride , but much less "white knuckling"

You've got that right !!! Before the "pandemic" we set up camp in ShipRock, took the SlingShot to 4 corners and from there rode to Cortez on 160/491 and then 491 from Cortez back to ShipRock. There were stretches along that route where, watching the buzzards circle overhead, I thought, "They're just waiting for the rattlesnakes to slow us down so they can swoop in and feed.".... It's amazing to think that 150 years ago, people in wagons pulled by cattle were making that same journey......
