New Tires with 1520 and 1620 Date Codes

I had my local tire dealer order five Sailun S637 ST235/80R16 tires from his distributor. I stopped by today to check on them. Two have a date code of 1520 and three have a date code of 1620. I told him when I ordered them that I wanted a 21 date code. Should I go with these or tell him to send them back and go elsewhere? Of course, unless another local dealer has them in stock where I can verify the date (which is unlikely), there is no guarantee of getting any newer ones.

IMO over a year old would be reason for them to find me some other tires IF they could get them. You don't list where you are in E TX or what shop you're dealing with but if you have a Mavis tire store somewhere in the vicinity you might try them. DT doesn't carry them so got mine from a store that is associated with Mavis - they were 4 mos. old.

Based on my experience with purchasing this year I'd say that you've hit the jackpot. Manufacturing has been spotty to nonexistent for more than a year. Finding tires with 2021 date codes my be problematic at best.

I think you're probably right Javi. My head wasn't in the "new world order" we have now - I was thinking "normal".

The 5 GY Endurance tires I bought in April all had 0621 for the date code. That put them at about 4-5 weeks old when I took delivery.

I ordered 4 from Wal Mart online last Sunday and received them yesterday, three are date code 4620 and one is 4120. Cheapest I could find at $168 per tire. Wal Mart shipped free.

A quick question. Isn't the first two numbers the week of the year ?

And this is telling us what?
In this day I don't see a problem with year old Sailuns, honestly even if things weren't the way they are.

I'd contact all the members of the forum and see if we could file a class action law suit! Sometimes I think folks read what some of our most prolific posters say and then tend to over think everything. Just saying... Not meant to offend... well maybe just a tad.

My post was in context to the overall conversation, and made with the reasonable expectation that one would be able to connect the dots.

For clarity; The original post was about a set of tires with two different date codes (I couldn’t care less what brand). A subsequent post mentioned how it might be unlikely to see 2021 date coded tires. I shared that it may not be as rare as one might think and provided information about my recent tire purchase. I have no experience good, bad or indifferent with the Sailun brand and the 2020 date codes cause me no concern. I also don’t care where the tires were made (the TK’s I replaced had 25,000 miles of use, and performed admirably despite their China Bomb reputation). I bought GY tires because I had a credit at Tire Rack and the Endurance had good reviews.

What I do have a concern about for the OP is the two different manufacturing weeks. Regardless of what brand or what model or where they are made, if I am buying a set of tires, I want them to all be made on the same day/week.

The dates were one week apart. It would not be a cause for concern to me.

Thanks for the responses. I was not concerned with the one week difference, but was instead concerned with the tires being more than a year old before they even hit the pavement. It has been mentioned many times about tires degrading 10 percent per year (IIRC). Is that true if they have been sitting in some warehouse?

I worked for a government fleet shop and when we mounted tires we would note the made date on the work order. High usage vehicles would wear the tires out before five years but we had a lot of towed equipment that would need to be checked for tire mfg date at every PM service. The tire program kept us pretty busy.
Our parts dept tied to keep tire stock rotated and fresh but sometimes even brand new tires went to the dump that had aged out. The guys at the tire disposal site were disapointed to find out we had drilled the sidewalls.

If the Goodyear tires were manufactured in the US and Sailuns came from China, I’d expect a significant difference in newness of date codes.

I would wait for the 21 year code. I had the same issue. I made the store remove the tires and put updated years on.
