Replacing OEM fuel tank or get an auxiliary tank

I need some advice whether to get a larger replacement fuel tank or an auxiliary tank.

If you have a shortbed truck where space is limited, then a larger replacement to the oem tank would make sense..
if you are ordering a truck and the 50 gallon tank is an option then I would get that( that’s what I have)

If you have an 8’ bed and enough payload I would get an aux tank because you can keep that for future trucks...a lot of people that have 50 gallon tanks also get the aux tank to increase range, that’s where I’m headed eventually
And the oem replacement tanks are really expensive

An inbed tank can be moved from truck to truck, I've had my 50 gal tank for 17 yrs. At the time I bought it I had a sb truck and I bought the inbed because it was hands down the least expensive per added gal option. There isn't a replacement tank that can offer as many extra gals and they typically aren't moved from one truck to another because of truck design changes

I had the RDS fuel tank in a short bed with small took box on top . I used the same tank on a standard bed with no trouble doing the switch. No sense to replace oem tank because of the 17 inch x 52“ 60 gal RDS . For around 1500 with labor you could buy 3 RDS 45 gallon tanks . Another reason I wouldn’t do the 20 gallon bigger tank for my truck is the extra weight on the left side .

Thanks. That makes since to get the inbed tank. I have a long bed and have enough payload available. My fuel tank is only 33 gallons and I fuel up at no less than a 1/4 tank so it does not give me much of a range. I will have to find a tank that is low enough to use the cover when unhitched..

Here is the one that I just bought. Height to the top of the tank is 16 1/2" and the "L" shape allows many of the crossbed tool boxes to fit directly over the horizontal part of the tank.

Here is a link to the place I bought it from and the tank itself....

https://www.tankandbarrel.com/shape-...nk-p-2389.html

Since receiving it, I have painted it black because my Dually is Black. I'm waiting for some nice weather to actually install it in the truck. It will be gravity feed and I also have a FlowRite 15 gallon per minute pump that I'm going to put on it also....just in case I want to do a quick re-fuel or need to pump fuel somewhere else. With the 37 1/2 gallon tank my truck has, and the 60 gallon aux. tank, I should have almost 95 gallons of fuel at the start of a trip. They say that with the aux. tanks you should only fill them to about 95% to keep fuel from expanding and leaking out the vent if the weather/temperature is hot.

I use the RDS in bed tank. 32 gallon.(actually holds 35) I also used it in my short bed prior to this 2020 Ram 3500. I like it a lot and it stays under the tonneau along with the hitch so when I’m not towing it’s all out of the elements.

Another one with the price per gal purchase is much cheaper with auxiliary tank, and it will move to the next truck I buy. It's easy enough to find one that fits under tonneau cover. Downside is tracking fuel level in auxiliary tank, can go expensive and get a guage or just drive till you factory tank starts losing level.

1. Remember the real capacity is less than the advertised capacity... mine is sold as 63 gallons... real life is 55 - 58

2. Install a filter

3. I rarely worry about how full the tank is, but drive until the main tank starts dropping. However, I have an old school square yard stick that I've marked and can use it to see how much room I have is I feel the need.

Here is a picture of my tank that I did some calculations for and will like you, use a measuring stick if I need to. Inches = gallons left .....

xrated,

That is the same size that would fit in my truck.

I looked up above at your prior post with the link.

Thank you.

Putting a sending unit and gas gauge in isn't hard to do. I have a TransFer Flow in my truck but I set my brothers truck up with a gauge, pump, filter and a blinking LED light for when the pump was on. He had close to 400K on the truck when he sold it. It's not rocket science.
If you check Craigslist or Facebook Market Place regularly you might find one there. That's where my brothers tank came from

How does the gravity feed system work? What prevents the main tank from being overfilled by the aux tank?
Thank you

There’s a ball valve adapter you install on the filler neck....when the fuel in the main tank is full it shuts off feed from the aux. tank.

I’ve never seen one installed in all the different tanks I’ve seen/installed. I’ve never seen an overflow in a Ford tank so no need for one. Ours just stays on all the time.

There’s no valve to keep the fuel from the gravity fed tank pouring out the fuel cap?

I have replacement tank

Chose this option purely because I need to have the complete bed space at times. Usually only keep it 50% full unless a road trip. Titan 55gal. Expensive yes, but no additional tasks needed.

You can never have too much fuel
I had KSH in lake Havasu build me a tank that will fit or contour my truck cover USA bed cover roll canister.. it’s “L” shaped with the lower portion under the roll canister I love it at 60 extra gal it gives me many fuel purchase planning options.. it does have a inline filter and ball valve.. I also have a on and off solenoid that’s works off my ford up-fitter switches.. I love this set up and the options it provides..

I was watching a car/truck show on the Motor Trend channel yesterday.
They replaced the tank with a 100 gallon tank on a RAM truck. It used the same filler and sender unit from the factory tank. Looked like a clean easy swap.
No valve to mess with, and you don't loose bed space.

"There’s no valve to keep the fuel from the gravity fed tank pouring out the fuel cap?"
I'm curious when you would leave your cap off and the valve open...the fuel is being fed by a 5-16 or 3/8 fuel hose. And through a filter I might add. I believe you are reading too much into this. Whose tank do you have and what system do you use?
