2016 GMC Canyon with the 2.8 baby Duramax here.
about 5,000lbs of trailer on a hot summer day at 60 mph on the flat is around 180. Pulling the pass with 35 mph corners on a hot day can send it to the 220s. Manual says no issue till about 240 or 250 for and extended time.
Before that I towed with a durango and was told should get too much higher than engine temp

I would go to your dealer and ask their trans tech. Our dodges depends on tans. 8spd can handle temps to 240 and consider that to be just on the high side of normal. our 6 speeds 240 we go into a trans overheat shift strategy and turn on a temp light. Completely different converters and shift strategies and fluid types. Ones a zf and ones a re trans.

I have a 2018 Ram 6.7. My trans stays at 167 running down the highways or towing my 17k GVWR toy hauler. It never moves.

I would look into that. If it never moves it sounds like it’s broken.

thats pretty normal. your in lock up most of the time, and in lock up thats how we cool the trans down. trans oil heats up by way of torque converter. the sheering effect of the fluid from crank to trans input shaft causes heat build up. so the constant up and down shifting and city driving, mountain driving from shifting frequently is the real killer. steady driving trans is in lock up where the clutch inside the torque converter is applied just like a manual clutch and there is no sheering so the fluid stays cool. if it were broke the light would come on. we monitor it. from cold to hot the temp must move and move in a certain amount of time and according to driving conditions and ambient temps.

It cools down and might go up by a degree but thats it. 167 or 168 is where the tranny runs at all times when warm.

If you have an HO with the Aisin that sounds right. I have a 19 with the Aisin and with my 15K trailer I still havent seen more that 165. That includes mountains in TN. It is 163 when not towing. As soon as it gets that warm the thermostat opens and it stays put.

Keep in mind that stock gages may not tell anything useful until you approach a limit of some sort. They do that to prevent owners from getting curious or nervous...

My Chevy 1500 runs around 185 when towing not much lower than that when not. So far I have not towed many big hills and I generally don’t drive over 60 when towing.
