Passport SL 229RK coupler height

We're purchasing a 2022 Passport SL 229RK. My dealer is like 75 miles away and couldn't give me the approximate coupler height so I can pre-setup my equalizer hitch.

I've read that normal coupler height for RVs is somewhere between 22" and 25"s.

Can anyone give me their 229RK coupler height when the rv is level?

I’ve always set them at 21-22”. When I transported RVs, it worked on each one. Close enough anyway until you get it home

Thank you for the information. My dealer said all RVs have different coupler heights which was no help at all. I can't believe all Passport SL 229RK have that much difference in coupler height in the first place.

They can be different from rv to rv, but they’re typically pretty close. As I mentioned, I had mine set to 21” and never had one so far off that I needed to change it. Most were a little nose low. I now have it set at 22” and every trailer I have (3 different trailers) sits almost perfectly level.

sorry for the late reply, we have the prototype Passport 229RK (2021 Passport 221 ML) and with the frame level the top of the coupler is 19-inches.

With a 19” coupler height, I’d set the ball on the truck to 20-21”.

I set my hitch up at 21 5/8" as that was my closes setting when you have 1 /14" increments to work with, Calling our new camper was fine except for one section of rode where I has this same exact problem with a different trailer.

When I took our speed up to 55 MPH we encountered some kind of what I call a harmonic imbalance. This problem was a bouncing of truck and trailer at a very predictable rhythm. I slowed down to 50 MPH and it when away. I speeded back up and the bouncing came beck.

I'm guessing I could have sped up and go over the top of this issue with speed but I'm retired and more impoe=rtantly, my wife was with me!

My thinking on this issue is installing new rear shocks with air lift capabilities. What do you think?

I’m guessing the section of the road is concrete with regular grooves in the pavement. Sounds like you’re a little soft in the rear. What type of WDH are you using?

So I think you are saying that the weight of the tongue brings down the top of the ball an inch or two?

Yes. Even with a WDH, there will be some squat. Most WDH instructions will tell you to set the ball height about 1” above the coupler height.

I was looking at Reese trailer hitches. They define "drop down" for their hitches. They say to measure the height from the ground to the bottom edge of the top of the square receiver hole, then subtract the height from the ground to the bottom edge of the coupler on the tongue. I hope I got the terms right. Anyway, a 2 inch dropdown seems to put the receiver even with the ball before hitching, so I am wondering if they plan on 2 inches of push-down by the tongue?

That’s too much measuring and calculating. I just measure the top of the coupler with the trailer level, set the hitch up so the ball is 1-2” above that. Pretty the same result, but easier to set up. Also easier to explain/understand.

Their definition is for non adjustable hitches. I need a cheap hitch for a smaller old trailer. The one I have with my weight distributing hitch is of course adjustable. Your rule of thumb is a good thing to remember.
