Hideout Slide Out broke for the 3rd time in a year

Hi. I have a 2021 Keystone Hideout 179rb. For the third time the slide out broke since we bought it new in last February. It’s now just days out of warranty and we are taking it in Monday.

Has anyone else had issues like this with the slide?

When putting it out one side sticks so you let off the button and it keeps going for a bit which binds the gears and then it will never go out again.

So frustrating that it broke 3 times already. With it being new and all.

Anyone know of an actual fix for this thing?

The dealer replaces the tracks and motors and then it breaks again in a few in and outs.

We’ve used it 3 times and it has broke 3 times.

Is it a Schwintek system? It sounds like it. I don't have first hand experience with them so hopefully someone that's worked on them will chime in. Just wanted to clarify the drive so you don't get a lot of info that won't help.

If it is a schwintek, then now it’s time to have your dealer contact Lippert and obtain the documents needed to measure the coach “hole” and slide.

Parts changers don’t get the problem solved.

It’s a schwinteck. Hoping they can fix it correctly this time.

Anyone heard of them having a bad batch of trailers with this issue?

I haven’t. But as I stated, there is a set of measurements they need to take BEFORE replacing anything.

What brand what is? The trailer, it’s a Keystone. The slide mechanism? It’s a schwintek made by Lippert Components.

I don't know about a "bad batch" but I do believe they have problems of some kind with timing. When I was looking for a new trailer the sales manager in FL told me to avoid Schwintek due to issues like you describe. When I returned to TX the SM told me the same thing about them. Hopefully one of our members can provide you the info to get it fixed.

Funny, because I happen to think they beat the cable system hands down. Once you understand the “quirk”, they are extremely reliable. To each their own, I would walk away from a brand new trailer if it had cable slides and non adjustable refer.

The quirk that I know of, and do with our bedroom slide that is a Schwintek, is that you must hold the switch in (keep the motors running)for an extra 5 seconds after the slide is fully out or in. That keeps the 2 motors in sync so the slide keeps running evenly. And, that you cannot stop the slide in between fully extended or fully retracted, for the same reason. You stop it anywhere else, and you may end up with a slide that is out of sync between the two sides and will not run in or out evenly.

It's not really a quirk when you think about it.. The two motors are NOT connected with any sort of sync drive rod, etc..

With two separate motors being fed from the same "Source" controller ( and they are ) keeping them in sync will always be an issue..

Hence thats why you need to hold the power button for a few seconds after motion has ceased.. both motors shutdown by themselves based on feedback sensed from their controller

Problems that are self induced by many RVers is:
... failure to keep upper V roller and gear rack area clean and lubricated
... failure to keep lower V roller and gear rack are clean and lubricated

Problems induced by the builder:
... crappy installation of the slideout H rack assy
... inept wiring of the wire harness to each motor and controller

And only use DRY lubricants. I have gotten away with a partial movement a couple of times, but I try to only do full movements.

So a 2020 cougar 315 rls eastern build what kind of slides?

I have a cable slide on the entertainment center kitchen side..
The dinette is that a schwintek?

And the bed slide I can’t remember what kind it has

Cable slides it’s ok to partially open but schwintek it’s not advisable?

A cable slide is ok to open partially, and then finish opening or close it, at least from my understanding and what I have done. Now, on the flip side, I would never make it a habit of partially opening and closing any slide very often, I just think that could lead to extra problems they weren’t designed for, and prefer to not add to any problem that could develop since we are talking about campers and their construction.

A Schwintek is the style that has an aluminum bar on both sides of the slide towards the bottom usually that has a “worm looking” pattern in it for the gear to follow. Please do not partially open or close one of these, it has lead to many problems for people that do it. And always hold the switch down for the extra 5 seconds so both motors “sync” and the slide is in or out fully. Also, I have usually noted Schwintek slides as being used in the bedroom slide, not sure why, but that seems like usually where they are used.

Chuckster, what kind of dry lube do you recommend? Because if/ when we need it, I would prefer to have some on hand.

What's odd is they recommend not partially opening. If you read the sync procedure it states to open it 3-5 inches, close holding the button for 5 seconds, repeat 3-5 times, afterwards open fully holding button 5 seconds, fully close holding button again. At least that was the procedure on my '13 bedroom slide.

Re synch: if room is retracted, hold EXTEND for 2 seconds, then hold retract until NO MOTOR noise. Repeat 2X.

Then extend for 5 seconds, retract until no motor noise. Repeat once. Then fully extend and retract making sure all motor noise has stopped at end of travel.

The controller senses amp draw and that’s what makes them stop.
