Portable air compressor

Several different threads have made mention of using their air compressor on the road to pump up a low tire. Any particular brand recommended?

Most that want quality and true portability get VIAIR, model depends on your needs.

VIAIR certainly has the most reviews on amazon. And they are very positive.

I bought a Viair to put in the toolbox that's in the bed of my truck, and it's for the air horns that are on the truck. For my Toy Hauler, I carry a DeWalt 6 gallon pancake that is 120VAC instead of 12VDC.....but I do have an onboard Onan 5500W generator on the toy hauler, so I have power to operate the DeWalt....even if I'm along the side of an Interstate or any road for that matter.

I grabbed a Ryobi 18v cordless 150psi compressor as I already have the drill & batteries and take it with me... Handles a couple of rounds of the rig and truck before needing a fresh battery.

Only problem is there is no way to lock the thing on, so you have to stand there holding the trigger.

We got the VIAIR 400P-RV. I've tested it to make sure it works, but haven't had to actually use it yet. I researched a lot before I settled on this one. I think you can't go wrong (other than the price).

I've used mine enough to really like it.. especially on the 110 psi tires... My 125 psi pancake would eventually get to 110 psi but it would take 15 minutes a tire to do it...

You bought the wrong pancake....the DeWalt goes to 165 psi before the pressure switch cuts it off.

I'm carrying a 20volt Dewalt that goes with my other tools. It will top off a tire but I'm not sure about going from 0-123psi. It requires a break every 10 minutes. So I threw the Chinese Sears in the truck for this trip. I need to get a VIAIR I think.

I have a four gallon Dewalt pancake and use it at home to air up tires. I have a Harbor Freight that is small and lighter and while it claims 150 PSI or something similar, it won't air up 80 PSI tires. I have a Campbell Hausfeld pancake and it will work but I use it one of the shops to air up my trike tires.

When I think portable for use on the road, I am not thinking 120 volt, looking at something small powerful and battery powered. Mine takes zero space!
ViAir constant use 12 volt with a 2.5 gallon tank. It is located underneath the bed of my truck, 150 psi!

Could you clarify which VIAIR model pump and tank you're using? And how you wired it in? Thanks!

This is the unit i bought for our 2016 Ram DRW.
https://www.amazon.com/VIAIR-Constan...85924690&psc=1

It is wired through a relay, 10 gauge wire from battery lead. As mentioned it is mounted inside the passenger side space between the outer fender and under the bed.

Any thoughts on whether the VIAIR 88P will work as a "touch-up/topping-off" compressor for my 2400BH Passport, or do I need to step up to the 300P? I already have a large pancake at home for bigger jobs so just looking for something to throw in the truck or camper to have when I need to get back up to 65psi or roadside emergencies. Also looking to save a few $$$s. The 88P claims to go up to 120psi. Definitely looking for a 12v with battery clamps; not cigarette lighter plug-in.

The thing to watch for is the duty cycle of the compressor. I've not looked at either of the ones you're considering, but in general, the less expensive units have a lower duty cycle - which means they work for a few minutes and then must be rested until they cool off. Then you start over.

With smaller compressors, this can result in a tire inflation task taking quite a long time - with a lot of manual intervention to honor the duty cycle requirements.

If you don't honor the duty cycle, then you risk burning out the compressor motor.

Also look at the CFM rating (Cubic Feet per Minute). The 88P is only 1.47CFM Free Flow @ 0 PSI. Max. I didn't look hard to find the rating under a load. The CFM is critical when looking at high pressure and large volume applications. The 88P would most likely do a good job on a lawn tractor or ATV but require A LOT of time to fill a truck or trailer tire.

You just don't get performance out of a "budget" compressor.
