First post and a few questions

Hello all,
Just picked up a nice 2011 outback 298re and overall happy so far. As usual, there is a discovery phase with used RVs where you find issues you didn’t see prior to purchase. Could use some help
1. Some leakage around slide seals after recent rain. I’m close but not perfectly level side to side which isn’t helping. Still I can see a gap in the top corners where the outer slide seals overlap. Any suggestions ? Rubber is in good shape.
2. TV has old style batwing antenna. Is there a signal amplifier button somewhere I need to push ? I’m picking up lots of RF channels during the scan but no locals.
3. Are there any specifically recommended sources for keystone repair parts ?

Thanks very much for any assistance.

Welcome to the forum.

As far as the seals are concerned if they are are pliable and not crushed the issue may be in the slide adjustment. Does the slideout extend fully with the same slide to sidewall gap all the way down the wall?

There should be a coax plate with a round push button to choose between cable and OTA input. That button will turn on the amplifier when set for antenna. The wall plate could be just about anywhere but typically it's close to a tv cable outlet. I'm confused on the "picking up a lot of RF chanels". Are you saying you're picking up a lot of cable chanels?

There are lot's of sources for parts depending on what you are looking for. The appliances, electrical, plumbing, suspension, etc. are not trailer manufacturer specific. If you could narrow down what you are looking for a more effective recommendation can be made.

RV parts for most of the components are "industry standard items". They are the same brands, same models for Keystone, Forest River and other RV lines. What's unique to Keystone (or most other RV brands) is the floorplan, colors and the logo (decals) on the FILON. Other than the "molded in logo on the wheelwell skirts" most of the exterior hardware is also "industry standard".

There's an extensive list of "RV component sources" in the second thread in the RV Repairs and Maintenance section of the forum: Here's the link to that thread: https://www.keystoneforums.com/forum...ad.php?t=12986

We had a 2013 Outback 298RE for 5 years. The television power booster button is located inside the cabinet under the television. It's on the side of one of the cubbies so it's kind of hard to just see.

I think your slides are built on a Rack and Pinion slide system. There are multiple videos on YouTube.com that help explain how to adjust the slides with this system. Look up "Rack and Pinion RV slide adjustment" and you'll get several hits on YouTube. Watching a video is much, much easier than attempting to explain it on a forum site.

RV products can be purchased from any number or variety of resources. Any RV dealership parts department will be able to help you, especially if they sell Keystone campers. Most of the time, they have in stock exactly what you are looking for. Sometimes they are about the only source to order specific items that can be purchased only through a dealership. It all depends. But, this is always a go-to resource, although you may pay more than other resources.

The next good resource, of course is the internet. Amazon is a good resource if you know exactly what you are looking for. There are also many, many on-line RV parts companies where you can order and have shipped to you, anything you can think of. As with all ordering on-line, sometimes you don't know exactly what you are getting until you actually get it in hand and then you find it it's not right.

Personally, when needing to fix anything on any of my previous or current campers, I always check my RV dealership parts department first. I do have a very trusted and very long-term relationship with my local RV dealership. They have helped me over the years find some really unusual items.

By the way, if thinking about switching that Batwing antenna for something different ... DON'T. The best antenna for your television is STILL the old, original Batwings. The only down-side is they are not omni-directional. That means, you have to get up and turn them to get different stations to come in. That is the difference between the old original batwings and the newer style omni-directional. But as far as reception when zeroed in, the Batwing absolutely cannot be beat! My current Rayzor works just fine, but my old batwings worked better.

Thanks everyone for the excellent feedback. I found the antenna amp button at the bedroom tv cable jack. I was working in the living room at the other end of the camper - no wonder I couldn’t find the amp button. TV working great now, thanks. I’ll check out the slide alignment YouTube’s. I put a level on top of both living room slides. They both slant away from the wall of the camper which is good. The bedroom slide which leaks, is perfectly horizontal which tests the slide seal every time it rains. I’ll see if I can’t tilt it down just a bit. Great feedback, thanks. Also appreciate the tip on RV parts thread.

The slide videos on youtube may be called "through the frame". I have this mechanism on my camper and it was manufactured by Lippert. There are other youtube videos that are in more depth.

It leaks only when out?

They make slide canopies too that cover the slide when open.

Thanks George. I think that’s the system I have ! Will check next time at trailer. As for slide covers, I’m planning to buy one for the bedroom slide. I see a variety of materials offered. Any recommendations on topper brands and awning material ?

The bedroom slide is a closet, right?

On one occasion, I found the bottom of the closet (carpet) wet and soggy. I thought it was strange because we had gone through a dry spell, but it was awfully wet. I got the garden hose out and sprayed and sprayed and sprayed trying to find where the water came from, whey the carpet was so wet.

I could not get it to leak or run water inside the camper, and especially, inside the walls of the sliding closet. I never figured it out. Of course the longer length clothes were touching the floor of the closet, so everything was removed and dried out. I left the closet doors open, put a fan on it and got the carpet and everything dried out.

And the funny thing was.... once it was dried out, we did not have that problem ever again.

The only thing I can think of that might have happened to cause it to be wet was condensation inside the closet. Really damp mornings and running heat inside the camper probably caused it. I think my suspicions were confirmed because about this same time, I realized the wall (front wall) where the bed mattress touched the wall was dripping wet also. It was wet enough water pooled along the wall where it met the bed.

Reading forums and watching YouTube videos, I realized all that wetness was caused by condensation (think of a cold aluminum soda can sweating in the heat of Summer, only reverse ... sweating on the inside of the can, the wall of the camper.)

We started leaving a 2 or 3 inch gap between the mattress and the wall. We also hung a small fan over the bed to keep air moving along that wall. And after doing that, we never had a wet all again. We also started leaving the door cracked or open on that closet slide also. That seemed to take care of all the wetness.

I don't know if this will help you or not with your problem, but it's something to keep in mind. Remember, I also had the 298RE model and it was a couple years newer.

Thanks Dutchman. Very interesting and helpful info. We’ll take some proactive steps regarding condensation. Yes, our problem slide is a closet in the bedroom. Our wet spot was actually below the slide on the carpet. I eventually found that the fresh tank fill port hose clamp had fallen off and the hose was very loose so a lot of the water came in when I filled our fresh tank. Secondly, the back flow preventer in the city fill port was leaking a bit so was a second source. That said, I definitely saw water dripping off the slide bottom when I sprayed water on the slide top so the slide seals are also contributing. 3 leaks in the same area
