Thanks all. I've had to put the trailer in storage and it's going to be a few weeks before I can get back to this. I've got what I need now to extend the wires so I will be able to pull the unit out of the mounting cavity.

Removing the furnace

I had do remove my furnace a couple of years ago, not because it wasn't working but because a little furry rodent decided to use the fan as an exercise wheel. I can't imagine how long he kept up but ended up creating a huge imbalance with plenty of noise, vibration and aroma. Like everyone has said, it requires cutting the wires. Removing the fan from the unit wasn't easy either. I ended up putting automotive weatherpack connectors on the wires when I extended them (with heat shrink sealed crimps) so that removing it would be much easier if Mickey's friends ever decided to visit. So far it hasn't been necessary.

Don't forget how handy your phone camera is for finding model numbers etc in place of the mirror where you have to decipher backwards writing.

You mentioned solder. Don't do that. I haven't looked at those wires, but if they are normal residential 14 or 12 gauge Romex, use wire nuts.

If they are smaller 16-16 guage, use automotive butt connectors, or install a set of Weatherpack connectors in case you ever have to remove this again.

You also could use heat-shrink connectors like these:

Solder connections, by themselves can be brittle in a vibration prone environment.
